Some time ago when I was off work due to an automobile accident I tried my hand at carving. The material is Jasper that I collected at Black Butte reservoir in Northern California. I used one of our local fauna as a model. They are off and running! Catching a ride. I won! I won! Thanks for letting me win! Smooch. Smooch. The finished piece. Thanks for looking. Bob

Another beautiful piece, Bob. Just don't tell us you experimented with slime for polish and that it worked. Rich

Suprisingly enough the snails move rather quickly so I had to get a mental image, remove the snail from my immediate presence, carve for a while and recapture another victim to see how well I was replicating it and repeat the process. I'd heard that in the distant past (100 years or so) that someone brought them from France for escargot and they got loose and proliferated significantly because they have no known predators in the area. They are now a nusiance, though they can be fairly easily controlled. People in the area have told me of various procedures to cleanse their systems so that they can be consumed. I have not been inclined to investigate the possibilities though.

I did the roughing out on the piece with my large grinding wheel on my cabbing unit. I then used my Foredom unit with a handpiece and small 1" SiC (Mizzy) grinding wheels to finish the shape. I sanded the details with rubber Cratex wheels. Polished as much as I could on my large polishing wheel. Finished the polish with small wood wheels and Cerium. It took a while to finish the piece. Wow, you've definitely got some skills when it comes to carving Bob, excellent job! ...And to Midnightrocks, snails are NOT bugs (sucking insects) but gastropods, so at least now you can correctly classify them as they gross you out. Gastropods actually make great sculpture & photographic subjects because they don't move too quickly. ;D Just check out this "portrait" I took of a Northwestern black banana slug on a camping trip in 2004...
