After all the talk lately about boulder opal, I thought I would cab some. The last one is cartoon opal, a nickname given by Beefjello. Its really weird stuff, you have to cab it kinda thick because of the soft matrix. It is also hard to get a shine on the on it too, because it is sometimes crumbly and soft. The one good thing is that it is full off orbs of opal, if you grind too much their is usually a good pattern below. Here are the pics:

tony. it looks like you know about putting a high dome on Boulder opal. it brings out more color. Ive been using zam with a buff to Polish. one thing i did. i put a two part epoxy. that they put on coffee tables. i Polish it the best i can then put a thin coating on. this will work with other stones. now this is not shellac. it is deferent. and some say it is cheating. mike

For the hobby person, does it really matter? I think if you have some real low budget opal that is falling apart, you have no choice but to keep it together lol!
