So I gave it a try from a piece gifted by Stoner...and there's STILL this soft spot in the middle! I already ground some nice opal away trying to get rid of it...I can't go any further without losing ALL of it! Is it kosher to Opticon/epoxy it or something, or is it a bum cab? (sorry about the fuzzy pic...my camera doesn't do macro too well!)

I don't know if it will work, but I filled a vug with some 330 epoxy last week and polished it out. Epoxy seems to polish as good as the rock itself. (I let the 330 epoxy harden overnight)

I think with BO you just accept what you have and not consider it a bum cab. It's one of those materials, it seems, where you never know if it'll polish great or a little lackluster. The opal itself is what matters.
However, didn't someone once saturate a soft stone with superglue (a few times) to get it to polish for someone else?
Lovely cab, though!

Hmmm, since I have epoxy...I'll try that! It's dull, since it's soft. When it's wet, it looks pretty! I just bought Opticon, but epoxy is easier, it seems. Thanks Randy and akansan!

I think your best bet would be opticon. I have never used the stuff before but I heard it works like magic. Ed uses a special type of gap filling glue you find at hobby stores with a accelerator. Maybe he could give better insight. Hope this helps & good luck.

I use Hot Stuff with an accelerator - works wonders

Dee, I use both epoxy and CA glue in woodturning. Epoxy dries with a real glossy shine but if I need to sand it at all I loose a lot of the shine. I sand or buff to 2000 but I never really get a good shine on it. CA glue (superglue) on the other hand shines up beautifully when sanded and buffed. I finished two deer antler pens with it this weekend and the shine was blinding for antler. I'd opt for CA.
