If you've been watching the news, you may have heard about the tornadoes that touched down in Kenosha County, WI. Earthdog and I live in the city of Kenosha. Normally, tornado weather is in the spring and summer, not in January! Usually, we are dealing with extreme cold or snow or ice or blizzards! The temps. had gotten up into the low 60's yesterday. It felt great. Then a tornado watch was issued and within a couple of minutes, the sirens were sounding (which is very rare for around here, being so close to Lake Michigan and in the middle of winter!). We had to go to our "shelters" here at work. My daughter, who is home on maternity leave, calls me and we discussed where she should go in her apartment building, if needed, since they don't have a basement. Her boyfriend just got home from work and they were watching out their window when he saw a weird wind pulling up trash into the air, so they went into the stairwell of their apt. Turns out, the tornado touched down only a few blocks from where they live! They didn't lose power, but the businesses near by did. The main intersection right down the block from their place has been closed off and still is. The worst/most of the damage was out in the county, in Wheatland. Earthdog took it in stride, but when he's driven semis over-the-road, he drove right through tornado weather many a-times and even out-drove a tornado or two! But for us, right in the city and this close to the lake, it's not a normal occurrence! I've experienced more earthquakes in my lifetime when I lived in Southern Calif. than tornadoes! Here's links to the local newspaper's website with photos that residents and pro photographers have posted! www.kenoshanews.com/photo_upload/kenoshanews.com/web_extra/index.php?galleryId=951617

Glad you're all ok. The stairwell sounds good, I know there's good to put as many walls as possible between you and the outside.

Good to know you are ok, was there a lot of damage in Kenosha? Hope there were not deaths.

There's only spots of damage. According to some of my co-workers who live on the northside of town, it jumped around and it hit one garage and then next door was fine. There were no deaths, only a few minor injuries!

I just saw about the tornados and thought that name sounded familiar - thought I'd come see if you guys were still on the ground! Good to see everything is ok - I'd guess a tornado is a rocker's greatest nightmare...can you imagine some of the piles we've seen in pictures on here in a tornado?!?! Certainly wouldn't want to be there when the wind started tossing those innocent little rocks around! Glad you guys are safe!

Oh my god! my heart is in my throat! I hate tornadoes! I keep having recurring nightmares about them - most of them involve me holding on to my son who keeps trying to get away from me.... - When we were at Disney's Universal studios where they recreated the twister from the movie, I had trouble breathing even though I knew it was a fake, so did my daughter.
How come not many people have basements? I thought they were pretty common?
I hope everyone's okay! My thoughts are with you

Glad to hear you made it through. It is a little late to get them but it has happened before. When I was a kid we had one take our barn down. We were in the house 100' away. Total calm before it came the a noise I don't want to hear again.....MrP

The correct spelling is Shawno (all the great Indian names around here can be challenging to pronounce and spell sometimes!). My grandparents used to live there. It's up North. Kenosha is on the Illinois/Wisconsin border in the extreme SE corner for the State. We are just about in the middle of Milwaukee and Chicago right on Lake Michigan.
I guess the Governor toured the area out in the County and declared it a State Emergency, so I guess they will be eligible for low interest loans and stuff.
