i had mention to someone. about putting black paint on the back of a translucent opal. well i got a reaction. that he could never do anything like that to enhance it . one thing i was thinking is that . when you take a opal in the rough and cut and polishes it well you enhance it. well here are some photos of some cheap opals that i was playing with. one is without paint and one with. now be sure i wouldn't sell one that is painted. without telling the buyer. and i just want to know, what are your thoughts are mike

I think it's the idea of it being paint that makes me cringe slightly. An actual doublet doesn't bother me (the black backing giving the same effect), but paint that could chip or scrape bothers me.
The opals do look good, but I think I'd stick to the traditional means, ones that a buyer would understand.

I would let the sone as it is. I'd rather paint the silver work that holds the stone, in the area behind the stone, so the effect would be the same I think.

Well.. here's my opinion too.. I don't mind the paint ... if it's on a lets say glass stone .. or something.. I like the natural state of stones.. However I have seen just recently seen a stone with another stone put in the back.. for the same effect well sorta.... ...and I thougth it was cool.. but I'm guessing paint on an opal is like putting duct tape on a Cadilliac.. .. but then again.. it's just my opinion ..

I guess they look nice in their own way but I like the brightness of them without the paint myself. Like the white one in the center bottom picture. I know it could be lighting but in the top picture it looks gray. Now on the blue one, the paint really enhanced it but I would be hesitant because of the possibility of scratches as Rhonda mentioned. I think a nice piece of black obsidian on the back would give you the same effect and be all stone.
PS ... Meant to mention, they have a beautiful shine, nice job on that.
