Hi All...finally got everything I need to really get started with my CabMate-but I'm having a really tough time getting a complete dome. I always end up with flats in the middle. I'm pre-forming with the 100 grit sic wheel(have an 80 diamond wheel on order), then using 100 grit sic sanding disc to crown. I always think I have a nice dome, then go on with 220 mesh diamond, 325, 1200 and polish with CO on leather. Boooo-ending up with flats in the middle on everything! I'm marking the edge of the cab as a guide. What's the dealio?
Thanks! Karen

Hi Karen,
Glad to see someone else getting started. Lots of fun.....
How much of a dome are you trying to get on what size diameter cab?

If you look at the stone after each step under magnification, so you have an edge in the center? I spend more time on my 280 than any of my other wheels, but even after the 280, I have to finish blending with my 600. I'll be the first to admit that I'm still learning though!

Inspect the cab dry for flats. Also, keep it moving all the time while you grind it.

One of the best things you can do is set up a bending arm magnifier/light by your arbor.... grind, clean, dry, inspect... grind, clean, dry, inspect Tony

How do you define flats? Is it less dome than you would like? When I dome I start at the girdle and work towards the middle. If the material is thin or the girdle line is too high, the top of the cab will be flattish. Of the four cabs, I posted yesterday, my wife said that the morrisonite was too flat on top. I also thought that the moss was a little more flattish than I would like. I don't like to get to aggressive with my 80 grit and couldn't fix the problem completely with the 220. Usually my 220 Nova solved all the problems, but since it has had some use, it does more sanding and less cutting than before. I optimistically hoped I could improve the situation with the 600 which has less wear.
The lesson I keep relearning is solve the problem with the lower grits, before moving on.
