I got the wheels mounted on my cabbing machine and fired it up last night. I took photos, and then forgot to post them to my photobucket account. When I saw my niece at Christmas, I brought her a bag of tumbled rocks. She loved them! She went to her room and brought me pieces of a broken geode that she had. She asked if I could make them pretty like the tumbled rocks. Her birthday is coming up, and I told her I'd have them ready for her birthday. She was super excited! I figured I'd use one of her gnarly geode pieces to get a feel for my cabbing machine. So, my first piece off my machine isn't really a cab at all. First off, I put the geode in 60/90 in my tumbler for a week to work off the crumbly outside. On my cabbing machine, I worked with the shape of the stone, and ended up with sort of a watermelon shaped slice. So, here are the results...I was quite pleased considering it's my first time doing anything like this.

Wow, that formerly "gnarly" piece of geode looks really interesting, and a killer shine!
Congrats on your new addiction!

Way to go!! Isn't it the most fun? It's a sweet little wedge! Your neice will love it! If you're like me, you'll pass your cabbing machine and think, 'I'll just work on one for a little bit...' and find out a couple hours later that your front is wet, your hands are cold, and you've created some beautiful cabs from rocks! ~dee

You definitely nailed the shine. Doesn't appear to be any flat spots either. Nice one.

You definitely nailed the shine. Doesn't appear to be any flat spots either. Nice one. Thanks for all the comments!!! I was very afraid of flat spots, and was super careful to keep the piece moving. I was quite proud of myself with the lack of flat spots when I was done...it was easier than I thought at least with a piece shaped like this. Now to try that on a real cab!

Got some more stuff to share with you guys! Here's a photo of the machine with all the wheels mounted. I'm running: 1) 80 and 220 metal diamond wheels 2) 600, 1,200 and 3k flex wheels 3) Expando with 8k, 14k and 50k belts (100k is on backorder ) Here's the gnarly chunk of geode I worked on tonight. Again, I kinda just let the stone tell me what it wanted to be. And...my very first real cab! This is some of Michaeljohn's chrysocolla.

That anal-retentive streak sure comes in handy once in a while! I think I'll hit the Chrysocolla with the 100k belt when it comes in...just to shine it up a bit more.

Coming from you, nephrite, that is high praise indeed. I hope I can live up to it...I'll sure try! I'm definitely hooked! By the time I was done last night, I could barely feel my fingers. My machine is actually a build-your-own. It's a Lortone 6 wheel arbor (no more Lortone blue, apparently). It doesn't come with a motor, so you've got to spec that out yourself...easy enough as Lortone also sells a motor that bolts right up easily. It's running 6" wheels.
