I just purchased a grinder with flexible shaft attachment. Variable speed from 0-30000 rpm. I also got a package of diamond bits for grinding and shaping. Do any of you do gem carving? I would love to see your samples! I want to do freeform shapes, not intricate images. Sort of flowing shapes.
Thanks in advance!

Thom, I have not done much myself. I took a class from an expert. One thing you might want to try is a mini-grinding wheel. They take material down much faster than the typical carving burrs. The ones I have are Lapcraft brand, 3/4" diameter, 1/4" thick. (Diamond Pacific #170-24-93702). The guy that taught the class had a 1 1/2" wheel mounted on a home-made arbor that really worked nice for material removal/rough shaping. He didn't remember where he bought it and passed away recently.

Howdy...........I got a workforce tile saw recently and have used it for trimming out preforms. The workforce blade is very impressive for the amount of course diamond in the rim. I would think it would be a great inexpensive rough carving tool. I am wondering about ganging up workforce blades for course grinding?!?!? Has anyone tried this? Bob

Bopb, it works great. You have to use spacers betwen the blades as the cores are slightly thinner than the rims.
