Hi everyone I am harry from mumbai (formerly bombay) India. just set up my account to join you all. Forums like these are rare in India and i am sure i made a right decision to join this board. I am involved with rock collecting, and want to move on further to rock tumbling. Looking forward to a great learning. Thought i would share my recent finds. Hope to make new freinds here. harry.z

Wow - beautiful finds! Welcome to RTH. I'm fairly new here, 6 months, which means I've had time to do (almost) 2 small tumbling batches!
There's lots to learn, beautiful pictures (like yours) to see....
Enjoy!

Hi Harry, welcome! You've definitely come to the right place!
Those are some fantastic rocks...did you collect all of them yourself? I'm always amazed at what people find to collect since I live in an area that has nothing much TO collect. *lol*

Hi Nichole, Amy, Desertdweller, Midnight~rocksi3, Cina.
Thank you all for the warm welcome, Feels great to be hear and know you all.
India is a big country and has lots of rocks (agates, quartz etc) most of it lies in forest areas.
Rock collecting here is very adventerous and i love that.
I have been collecting for many years and have a good chunk of it.
I wanted to know the difference in a lortone and a rotary tumbler,
We use wooden barrels here (old and primitive methods),
Also is it better to have seprate barrels for dry and wet run, any info might help.
Thank you all and keep Rocking.
Harry.

Hi, Harry and welcome to the forum. You have some beautiful bloodstones (heliotrope), I'm sure you'll tumble them beautifully.
Adrian
PS. I've noticed your question about the difference between Lortone and rotary tumblers. Lortone is a brand that makes tumblers. I have a lortone tumbler. Another brand is Thulmers, and there are others too.
Now about rotary: tumblers are either rotary (a horizontal barrel that spins slowly) or vivratory (or vibe) - vertically specially shaped barel that vibrates with pretty high frequency.
The difference between the two tipes: - the rotary requires lot of patiency. Expect to wait at least two months for decent results. But the stones become rounded, smooth. - the vibe works faster, in a week or so the rocks are ready. But it requires often inspections of the rocks and the rocks come out more close to their initial shape (not so round and smooth). I hope it helps. Normally, you should search through older posts using some key-words like "tumbling", but unfortunately this feature is out of order now, for the moment I hope. You will find there lots of useful information about tumbling recipes and so on.

Thank you adrain for the info.
Vibratory tumblers are something that is new here, usually the tumbling drums used here are rotary kinds, (wooden barrel with a fiber coating within).
you are right it takes a long time.
Will keep you bothering with more questions/doubts if any.
Are any members visiting Tucson this year?
Thanks and regards Harry

Welcome to the board! I have a small Thumler rotary and a Lot-O vibe; I use the rotary to shape the stones, then finish (quickly) in the vibe. Works for me! Enjoy the board, and I can't wait to see more pix of amazing rocks like those. Wow!
