i was looking at some turquoise rings and stuff. in a high end shop. like his stuff costs a lot. anyway was talking to the owner. and he was telling me that a close friend of his owns the old opal mine in redrock canyon. and he is now working it. and since he has equipment there he has to have a caretaker living there. so its is open to dig for opal for a fee. how much i don't know. but I'm going to do a one day trip there and check it out. well as soon as the weather is OK. mike. fwiw

Take a lot of water, enthusiasm, energy and such. Beating on a ledge of lava all day requires all of the above! Beating on it in the summer requires copious amounts of the above! I had a lot of this when I was younger and I went there. It was fun but the results were minimal at that time. Bob

Oh yeah! I've seen some nice opals from that area. They appear to be little nodules like the Mexican Fire Opals but the matrix looked to be tough stuff, maybe vesicular basalt. The guy who had them said it's neat specimen material but hard to extract whole nodules or sizable pieces. Never been there myself but am very curious about the area. Make sure and please take lots of pics and write us a filedtrip report!.....Mel
