Hey, all, I am bumping this up, with a request for those interested to let us know if they are planning to attend? I am really looking forward to this; Jim and Marni are hoping, also. Who else?

Give me a date, people? I can do a Thursday thru Sunday. Earlier in Sept. rather than late might be better, for tent campers. I intend to reserve a cabin, myself, but I might share, depending on who comes with me. So, from my angle, we can do Sept. 4-7, and you all can help me celebrate my 39th birthday for the 6th time; OR 11-14; OR 18-21. I am including Thursday in my traveling time, and also time on Sunday to return home. I am less than 500 miles from the site Edog first mentioned. If I leave early Thursday, there will be time to hunt that day, plus Fri. and Sat., and perhaps a bit Sunday. Depending on other circumstances, I could leave Wed. afternoon, get there Wed. night.
So give me input, folks?
Thanks, and thanks, Fairburned; can't wait to see your man cave!

Hi all, Is anyone for sure planning on going on this trip? My wife and I would like to come if ok with you all. The 2nd week of September would be best for us, but am flexible . I would be driving from Michigan, and would most likely be there on a Monday. Anyone else planning on making a full week of it? Awaiting your responses, so I can make plans, thanks, Bob

We are planning to go on this trip for sure. Tell us some dates and we will work with them. Not sure how long we will stay. It's a long day's drive each direction for us. We were just collecting there at the beginning of July for a day, for about the fourth or fifth time. We managed to hit a 64 degree day instead of our usual 115. It was quite nice except for the rain at French Creek. I've always loved the stuff we've collected there but this year was exceptional. We found 2 Fairburn agates -- Shawn at the Rock Shed agrees with my ID on those -- and a number of other suspects, which if they aren't Fairburns, are still agates to know and love. Anyhow, just say when.

Hey, all of you who know the area, could you post some more info? Not sure if earthdog can make it, he and Takila are hopeful, last I heard. This is the closest thing to me, and I would love to go.
Cina, how far is Rapid from where the hunting is? Or do you have other spots in mind? (Refer to first post, I guess).
Puppie, where did you folks hunt, exactly, and what are the accommodations there?
Is there a fee to hunt? How much? How far to do you have to walk? How many pounds should we expect to carry for how far? etc. etc.
I can also probably just do a (late) Thurs.-Sun.
So, as I said earlier, the first 3 weekends in Sept. work for me. I am trying to step up and keep this going, but I don't know enough. Help would be wonderful!

Well I was planing on going on this trip but I have not been to work since February 29, getting ready to go back any time now. But if this trip happens I have a Friend that has a rose quartz mine in Custer that will let us in if I can get word to him on what day this is going to happen. He also owns the "DICKS ROCK MUSEUM" in Estes Park Co.(also called the red rose rock shop) I need 3 weeks notice to see if he is free a month would be better.Carl Scott is his name and he is a very busy man Rodger may know him anyone in Custer can tell you how to find the mine.Let me know so I can get word to him would love to go but I just spent a week and half down south digging in the dirt 2 days of that with Kap digging some Ammy Quartz at Diamond Hill mine. Then went down further south and dug some Savannah river agate had a great time found some nice rock and spent to much money for someone who has not been to work as long as I have lol. Wife would have 2 cows if I told her I wanted to go up north. George

It isn't hard to find the traditional places. They are in guidebooks and there are trip reports with great directions online and I believe on this board -- didn't somebody post about Railroad Butte once? I thought the place originally suggested sounded like a fine place to stay, centrally located and close to some good spots. The traditional places are heavily collected. If it were possible to get onto private property that would probably be great. I've only gone to public areas (grasslands and national forest). Sounded like there was a pay area near the camp. I don't know anything about that. We've done a little in the Hills area but more in Badlands, which has been easier. The hills could be great if you had a guide (Roger?!) who could take you to good places.

I'm in for either Sept 12-14 or 19-21. At least one of my kids will be going with me, perhaps wife and 2 other kids.
If it's my whole family, we'll do a cabin. If just me and my daughter, we'll camp.
Looking forward to it!

I hate to say that since I lost 2 weeks vacation this year, gas prices, the electric company raising our budget $100 more a month, my new truck payment, Marnis mom being out of town till Oct. so we don't have anyone to stay with the kids since they will have already started school and also with the possibility of me having to get an attorney to fight my ex in court so I can keep custody of my daughter at the end of this month, we won't be going on this trip. I'm bummed, pissed and sorry all in one.

Sorry to hear that Earthdog!!! I hate it when stuff snowballs like that. You could probably use the break.
What does this mean for the trip as a whole? Are others still planning to go?

Alert! I just posted some tumbles from my visit to SD last month in the totally rock tumbling photo section. I'm shamelessly promoting this trip.
