Everyone's "recipe" for boiled eggs is different. I boil them for about 10 minutes and let sit covered for about five before doing the cold water routine, but I know someone else that lets the water just come to a boil, covers the pot and removes it from heat, lets sit for 15 minutes, and then cools them with ice cubes and running cold water.

cover as many as you want to boil with at least one inch of cold water. put the pot on the stove and bring to a rolling boil. turn off the burner and let sit for 22 minutes. run cold water into the pan until the water stays cold and the eggs are just warm to the touch. let sit until eggs are cool. perfect eggs every time.

I have at least five different methods for hard cooking an egg!! And I can't swear by any of them!!!! ;D Here's a "How to" page that offers lots of choices and tips. www.wikihow.com/Hard-Boil-an-EggYou can also buy a neat little cooker that works wonders for hard cooking eggs in a microwave oven (I got mine at Wal-Mart). Regardless of how you end up cooking them, I just have to tell you that you made my heart grow three sizes today. It takes a strong and brave man to ask "How do I boil an egg?" Marni is going to be so proud!!! Lady B

My cookbook says 10 if the water is boiling hard, 15 at a medium boil, or 20 for a soft boil.
I have a steamer/ricer cooker and I put them in there for 17 mins. Then cool off, and let them soak in ice water.
They do turn out better with older eggs. And, when they are cooked through, you will be able to spin them like a top, whereas liquid-ey eggs won't spin.

We have chickens and have fresh eggs. Still haven't found a way to boil the eggs and be able to peel them without the shells sticking.

Two things, First, if the eggs float, they are not going to taste good. Second, to peel the eggs easily, boil them, then soak them in cold water. Drain the water and shake them in the original pan. The shells come right off. Straight out of Ann Landers. It works.

the best way would be to wheel her in to the kitchen and let her do it before you burn the house down. but if you had a jap bike like me you could cook them in with the rice
Hope all is going well with you and the mrs

Dude, that was funny. I like you alot! We need to go riding some day. Lady, everytime I want boiled eggs I have to ask Takila "how long". I do know about cooling them in cold water, my shells never stick to the egg. I never thought this post would ever get this many replies. I figured you all would just think I was a dumby.

You bet they did. I did the boil for 1 min. and then covered them for about 25 and let them sit. Hard boiled eggs give me gas though..
