So, with most of you northern hemisphere folk in the grip of winter and cold and snow and not being able to hunt rocks, I thought I'd take you on a little rock hunting trip with me.
First however, there is a bit of a story...
My mum and dad are from live in Newcastle, 13 hours drive south of Brisbane, but were having a 2 week holiday in Noosa, 2 1/4 drive north of Brisbane. They rented a 3 bedroom apartment, a couple of streets back from the beach. they told my wife and i that we were welcome to come up and visit. Well, I don't get to see my parents very often, I love my parents and we are great friends with them, they offered a free holiday and I had a few days leave left on the books so we took up their offer and visited them for a few days.
Oh yeah, and being in Noosa put me 2 hours closer to one of my favourite rock hunting sites, which is normally a 4 hour drive.
So, I suggested to my son, Linc, that we ask my dad if he would come rock hunting with us one of the days. He's never been before but is the kind of guy who'll give anything a go.
We asked and he was definitely up for it. So me, my dad and my sion had a "boys day" while my wife, my mum and my daughter stayed in Noosa have a "girly day".
The day we went to the farm it rained on and off all day. I have never seen it so GREEN. Queensland has just experienced its worst drought in recorded history, no lie, and now over 70% of teh state is literally under water with flooding...no lie!
It was wet and muddy and very grassy. Rock hunting was much harder than it has ever been there nbefore with all that grass but we had a great time, including my dad.
So, here's the photos of the hunt and the haul will be in a separate post. You can see the haul here...forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Pictures&thread=21583&page=1
Lots and lots of long, green grass. That's my dad in the distance.
This is Linc. Do you like the shirt my wife bought for him? She's a good woman with a great sense of humour.
Linc and Dad
Me and my boy and my faithful tabasco sauce t-shirt...hmmmmmmmm...hot sauce
Linc had real trouble with the mud. It would be over 1 inch deep on the soles of our boots. For a little dude that can get very heavy. He pushed on however...what a little champion
No, they aren't native. Yes they are a pest. But they are so beautiful.
the property owners were not home that day so we could not go to the main agate yeilding area right near the house. They asked us to leave our $10 in the mail box. We drove to it, opened it up and look what we found in it.
There were six of these little guys in there. They are green tree frogs and they can get into anything. Some people even have them living under the lip of their toilets
Even with all the clouds and the rain I got sunburnt quite badly...again. All I have to do is look at a picture of the sun and I get burnt!
I hope you enjoyed the pictures.
Have top day,
Mike
