Well I finally got the grinder that I won in Jamie & Rodney's raffle all set up and found some time to use it. Apparently a bigger better machine doesn't make my cabs any better. LOL I can't seem to get a good picture no matter what. I even made a small photo tent and still couldn't get a good pic. Fluorite. I know its too soft for jewelry I just like the stone. I didn't do very well on the shape. Unknown agate. I think this one is serpentine. Its got nice veins of quartz through it. Thanks for looking.

Tony, I really like the serpentine, one! It's got great colour, and the shap works really well, I think.
Is that background actually black? I think your camera may be overexposing the photos because it's trying to make that black background 18% grey. Does your camera have a spot meter?

Glad you got the old grinder going Tony. That's a nice solid machine and will give you years of service. Your cabs look great. I wouldn't worry about the shape of the flourite, soft stones are difficult to work. The other two came out nice, and it only gets easier from here.

Tony, excepting the iregular shape those look great, and i think you did them this way because they're soft. I only worked one obsidian cab and noticed the difference between a nice hard stone and a soft one. Even the 400 diamond pad "bites" incredibly quickly. Maybe it's strange, but my favorite is the fluorite. I think this cab has the potential to become a really gorgeous one.

Tony, These look great for a beginning cabber. I like the serpentine. I've got a lot of that stuff (picked up in a parking lot near the Susquehanna on the way to Lancaster). I've tried tumbling some, with mixed results, nothing to polish yet (tumbler troubles). But hope to try some out on my grinder when I get a motor and wheels.

And that's the first time I've seen a Flourite as a cab... And just think ... they can only get Better! I'm too scared to even show what mine look like LOL.. ... so Cab on Mister!

Ha! Glad you got grinding!! Now, I don't feel guilty having you take time to do wheels I love that serpentine and the shapes are fine! I have a 1200 diamond wheel that is metal and it works wonders on smoothing out ragged lines before I go with the expando drums and belts. It takes material, but slowly so you can control it more than the 600. It is great for soft stones. Tony

Thanks everyone for the comments. I think I do fairly well on the shapes, I learned a lot about shape in my years as a woodturner. Its the mechanics of getting a good smooth dome where I fall short. My poor eyesight doesn't help either. I use a magnifier but still don't see my shoddy workmanship until I get to the final polish. Of course I'm probably being waaaaay too impatient. LOL
