Well, I came home from a particularly depressing US Fish & Wildlife meeting Saturday about a group of pigeon fanciers engaged in wholesale slaughter of hawks and falcons to find a parcel from our Jamie ( Desertdweller) in the mailbox. Well, when I opened it up it brightened my day considerably as it contained these three wonderful specimens. And I mean Wowser, what specimens!!!! One was a slice of one of the Flower garden slabs she got at Woodward and the others, wonderful slices from the Konig rockpile agates. Jamie, thanks so much!!! You're a sweetie! And for you folks, here are a couple of pics of the treasures! Thanks for lookin....Mel Flower Garden: Unknown but fantastic plume ( Maybe Verde Garden Plume?) Super neat slab of unusual flame agate:

Sad to hear about those wonderful birds of prey, Mel. But getting a parcel with those rocks inside would certainly make me smile too. You scored big-time with those. The red in that flame agate in intense.

I read a news story about that sitation recently...so sad. How nice to come home to such a gorgeous selection of rock, though!

I know first hand of Jamie's generosity, she is the greatest, Rodney too. I also know first hand about that agate pile, and there are some treasures to be found there for sure.

Those are beautiful. That really sucks about what those pigeon fanciers are doing, hope they get some big ol' fines for it or something.

Cher: All the folks charged in the undercover investigation of the hawk killing ring were convicted for multiple violations but, due to weak laws, the penalties were not that bad. Fines between $3000 and $25,000, 6 months suspended sentences with 5 years probation, loss of all guns, traps etc. and they had to write a letter of apology. One guy got 1000 hrs of community service and that's a lot of picking garbage along the roads! A bunch of the offenders were gang types though and got caught on still other crimes ranging as high as rape as a result of the investigation. Basically all a bunch of typical low life scumbags....Mel

Mel, did this take place in California? Or was it state wide? Did they have any idea how many birds had been killed during this deal?

Jamie: It was apparently a multiple state sting . Fish and Wildlife decided to tackle the problem because these folks were slaughtering so many birds during migration so as to actually have a decided impact on the species concerned. They were manufacturing and distributing special traps and killing thousands of birds. For what they were doing, they pretty much got a slap on the wrist but it might have the effect of changing some of the laws so maybe in the future this will become a much more serious crime. We all hope so anyway..Mel
