Yep, I bled through most of my cabbing tonight. This makes me a real cabber, right? ;D Here's the new ones...again, any IDs would be great! This one is off the same piece as the round one I did this weekend. Seems to have some metallic inclusions in it...they seem to like to rust, too. Nice and mossy. My favorite of the night: Kinda looks like a tombstone...I'm guessing it's some sort of agatized plant material. It was very, very hard. Thanks for looking.

I like the green one, but the last one is AWESOME! Could be wood or some other vegetation, but I would say fossilized something for sure.
Nice job and great shine on all of them!

Those last two are really choice! Nice job on all of them. Now can you guys remember what dop sticks are for? Really, all that bloodshed is unnecessary.*S*

Very nice cabs Titania! That green one is gorgeous..but that last one is out-of-this-world! Nice fingers too...same with yours Mike. They make me cringe. Mine look like that, but not due to grinding rocks. Fingernail biting!!!! Steve

Very nice. That last one is totally awesome. My wheels are so worn I can't do that to my finger even if I wanted to.

Nice job ... you're OFFICIAL!
The first one is probably Rhyolite.
Second one's a bit hard to see ... probably moss agate of some sort.
Third one looks to me like a dendridic plume agate.
Fourth one is petrified palm wood.

Wow! Those are all winners! The last one reminds me of a fingerprint, with all of those lines! Great, great job. Are you a wrapper, too?

The last two are probably my favorites as well! Love those.
And now that you've earned your badge, it's time to try a dop stick. Granted, I just ended up with grind marks in different places instead!

Way to go, Titania! Blood! Grinded nails! YES, you're in the club! And what beautiful cabs! That last one and your favorite are in my opinion equally amazing!

I ordered an electric dop pot when I ordered my cabbing wheels. It's on backorder, unfortunately. I've got wax and sticks all set! I'm guessing once I start dopping, I'll be barking my knuckles instead. That last cab, the tombstone, is a pretty big one. It's about 3 1/2" long. I would really like to drill it and wear it. I think it makes a neat statement. Any suggestions on how to go about doing that? I don't have a drill press, but I do have nice hand drills and a Dremel. Thanks all for the encouragement and comments.

Your really coming along in your skills. They are all really nice, good shine too. That last one is the best of the bunch though. It definitely looks like wood grain to me. I have several species of real wood that looks just like that.

Okay, dopping is good only as long as it stays stuck to the stone (mine always seem to go flying off) so cheap bandaids are your friends - ground my finger nail bed almost down to the skin - cheap bandaids are the best - I have a box just for cabbing - next to my machine - I hate to see bloodshed over cabs..
I really like the mossy one!

I was just thinking about this situation, and about prevention rather than "cure", and an old memory hit me...
My Mom used to work for the Post Office back in the late 60s, early 70s, as a mail sorter. This was just before they started using machines to do the sorting. She wore a thing on her right thumb which was like a rubber thimble. It covered her thumb down to the first knuckle, and it had some little breather holes in it, so air could get in. It was amber/brown colored, and the rubber was about 1/32" thick. These were supplied to the sorters by the Post Office.
I don't know if the Post Office does any hand sorting anymore, and if they do, I don't know if they use these little rubber thimbles anymore, but they might. If not, there may be other uses for them and they may be available from somewhere ... like maybe an office supply store.
I just figure it would be best to prevent your fingers from getting beat-up in the first place. I think these little doo-dads would offer you good protection from nicks while still providing enough tactile sensitivity to do the work.

I'm pretty sure any office supply place carries them. If not, I know I could steal a few from work. I'll give them a try! I never even thought of that!!!!
