Must have been murder, he was found June 13, 1993. I can't believe he'd just walk out into the reservoir. But then, who knows, he may have been crawling around the sides and fell in and couldn't get the backpack off.
Ok, reading further I see he was dressed in winter clothing. Why would anyone be walking out on the ice with a backpack full of rocks? Perhaps it was suicide.

It would help if they would show a picture of the rocks.

Tony, that was my thought! I kept wondering about those rocks while reading the article.

If they were killer rocks I could see where he was trying to get them home, but if they were just old crappy rocks, then someone probably helped him into the drink. Do we have to explain everything to them detectives? Tony

It was suicide. One...he had the picture of him and a child close to his heart. So the child in the picture meant a lot to him. TWO.. There was no mention of him being a rockhound which would have explained the rocks. The rocks were used as weights along with the heavy winter clothing. THREE..if it was murder, I don't think he would have had the picture over his heart. He most likely would not have had the picture at all.

Um, from my read of the story I gathered that he WAS the child in the picture... Show me the rocks, I'd tell you in a new york minute whether he fell in accidentally or was "helped".

Hmmm I'm thinking it was Suicide as well.. I mean If I was going to off myself.. probably would be that way too...but at least wait till winter... He was a drifter .. not a rock hound.. and I don't think you'd be wearing Layers of "winter clothes" in JUNE to collect rocks.. plus he took the only thing that had meant anything to him and held any value which was a well taken care of photo of his grandpa..
If you've ever contimplated suicide.. you'd see he thought of everything.... it's just the idea he used rocks that has some of you rockhounds confused .... lol I mean if I were to help someone in a river.. I wouldn't dress them in extra layers of winter clothes... probably bash them over the head with a rock first then dump them and I would Tie the rocks to them anyone could slip out of a back pack.. IF... they wanted to.. kinda sad poor guy..

Rally, that's what I thought too, he was the child which would mean it was a precious memory to him. LOL I agree, show us the rocks. Wonder if they kept them as evidence.
Roxy, June was when they found him, they figure he went through the ice sometime during the winter. It is sad that no one missed him.
