Wow, a poem just for me? Too cool!
Thanks for all of the Birthday wishes, it sure puts me on top of the world.
I thought I would tell everyone about the adventure we went on yesterday for my Birthday, or at least a couple of the highlights.
Its been raining here and our favorite spots to dig are on the other side of the Hassayampa River, which is usually dry but it was flowing pretty good yesterday. We get to the river bottom and there are 4 or 5 guys there that had been out riding around on their quads so we asked them if they had tried to cross the river at all and they said yes but that they had gone upstream a ways before crossing. So Rodney takes off and I see him plunge into the river about 200 yards upstream, it was deep enough in the middle that he had to get up on his seat to keep from getting soaked.
So, he makes it to the other side and starts waving me on to cross also. I asked the guys exactly where they had gone into the river at and three of them pointed in different directions. Anyway, I headed toward the spot where one had crossed and I had two of them coaching me on what to do to make it over to the other side.
OK, Taz, (my dog, she is usually my passenger) is on the seat behind me and we start across the water. Rod's waving for me to come straight across, one of the guys are yelling for me to go upstream, the other was telling me to head for the sandbar in the middle and I'm zig-zagging up and down trying to do all three. We finally made it to the other side and headed toward Gates RD.
Well the water had cut a channel that was flowing on the other side of the dry land in the middle of the river bottom between us and Gates Rd. Rodney and I pull up to the edge and I'm already shaking my head noway and he gets off his quad and grabs a branch to stick down into the water to see how deep the middle is, only the water was flowing so fast the branch he was trying to measure with was getting caught up in the rapids and being washed downstream before he could reach the bottom.
To me, thats a pretty good indication that it isn't safe to cross.
Rodney hops back on his quad and says optimistically, "It's not that deep, we can make it!" I'm still shaking my head no. He rolls down the side of the bank and all I could see of his quad were the handle bars and his seat which he was standing on then the current starts to take him downstream. He managed to make it to the other side and shoots up out of the water onto the bank and into the middle of a mesquite tree.
This is the part that made my whole day. He casually looks back at me and starts waving me on to come across. Here he is 30 feet downstream stuck up on the bank in the middle of this huge tree and he's yelling, "Come on, you'll be able to make it across."
Ya right! Me and the dog had talked it over and already voted against it. He's telling me it wasn't that bad and he's still trying to figure out how to get out of the tree he drove into. Needless to say he had to cross again to get back to where we were. That was the highlight of my Birthday adventure. I'll post some pictures of the chrysocolla I dug up yesterday, we both did really good just digging in the tailings and dump. It was a great Birthday and it didn't end until 4:am this morning....Thats when we rolled in. Pictures up next.
