Hi All, Has anyone ever used "corn emery"? Charlie Powell offered me his rock collection and I obliged . Bits and pieces of grit and polishing compounds and also this corn emery are extras and I like to know what value to put on it compared to the silicon carbide grits. Thanks for your help Jack

Corn cob is sometimes used instead of walnut shell in metal finishing as it is less abrasive. It would probably be ok in a vibe tumbler for polishing turquiose. I'd put it on the shelf where you keep your "stuff I might need some day".

It depends on what you are trying to do with it. For heavily tarnished silver, it might be better than porcelin beads. To break off the large tarnish. Heavily tarnished silver makes a real mess out of porcelin polishing, unless you have a flow thru vibe. Works great on cartridge cases however. Almost as good as walnut.

Thank you for your replies John and Docone.
I understand that I could use it for softer stones one day. It is not very likely that I will use it to polish silver bullets or brass shellcases.
Cheers
Jack

Hi KD, it is good to be back. I have been places and done lots of rockhounding and been real busy with all sorts despite being unofficialy retired haha. Went to a wedding of a second cousin in Holland. Spent 8 days there, found one agate near the river Rhine and one bit of petrified wood. I neve knew they that there haha. Then on to Iceland for 6 days...way too short for a good look around. Then 2 weeks in southern England where our daughter is now residing. I did send the necessary boxes of rocks home and carted some away as well.

Some time ago my rockhound mate Charlie Powell was pondering over what would become of his collection and he mentioned that I was one of the people he had in mind of taking it over.
Then some 5 weeks ago he offered it to me for sale and I could not refuse. As we have now a new milkshed on the farm, the plan is to convert the old one into a display area where I will have one room called Charlie's room, in honour of his great skills with stone. He was very good with wood also, and I hope to purchase some of his wood items as well...a big collection of wooden spheres of many of the types of native and non native trees.
And yes, I am still occupied with tumbling stones. I chucked away my plastic pellets as I considered them to be a real PAIN. I am most times pleased with the results of endproduct. On advise of my gritsupplier I sort my stones into 2 sizes after 220 grit. Those that are an inch and over and those that are an inch and under. I carry them through like that in 600 grit and polish. Polish gets reused over and over and over again and sometimes a spoonful gets added as requiered. I do strain it EVERY time as I pour it into the barrel, through a stocking of my darling Jeannine so as to avoid any rogue chips of previous batches. Because chips still happen regardless of pellets. Tomorrow I will be on my way with 2 other rockhounds to a limestone quarry looking for fossils.
Take care
Jack

It's very easy to use to resize pics.
