Does it have a varible speed controller hooked to it? It appears to be direct drive (no belt/pully) just curious as I am thinking about building something similar.

It looks simple and effective. I wonder how does it look now, since wood and water are not the best friends. I've noticed the splash guard, but by experience I've seen that water makes its way beyond that guard somehow. Does that type of diamond disk have a long life?

This lap is a direct drive so there is no variable speed, but I haven't come across a time when I needed to change the speed. The key to this lap is the water trays. I was able to buy about 12 of them from a surplus store here in San Jose. Speaking of those trays, did anybody ever build their flat laps with those trays? The water pretty much stays in the tray and the little bit that does get on the wood hasn't caused any problems for me.

Nice one Ed, Looks good to me. If speed is an issue, the following is a photo of a sphere cutting rig... This could be adapted as a flat lap. By the way, this is not my build. It's a photo I swiped from the Internet. I intend to build a flat lap using the same layout. Derek Hall

That sphere maker is sitting in my basement. I tried using it as a flat lap with grit and water but the 600 rpm it runs at just threw off the grit. What speed can a diamond disk run at? My sphere maker would need a 8" disk. Scott

High Scott,
Was it your photo I swiped?
I can see that loose grit would just fly off, try using a silicon carbide pad.
You could also try an oiled plywood lap charged with diamond in the normal way.

Ok my inexperience is showing now, but what is "the normal way" to charge a oiled piece of plywood? Keep in mind I have only ever seen pictures of a flat lap and the nearest spot to see one is at least 5hrs away.

Diamond laps on Ameritool units run at 3450rpm at full speed so your 1725 motor would be no problem. Wood laps are generally turned very slowly as are Phenolic laps for faceting (300-600 rpm).

Hi Scott, The following is a tutorial on charging a lap... www.battlap.com/charging.html ... more importantly, at bottom of the tutorial you will find a link to a short video showing it being done. Hope this helps, Derek

Very intriguing!
Dumb question: what's keeping the water from running down into the motor? And is it heavy enough - any vibration problems? The diamond laps are steel plates, right? How many do you need to get a finished cab like the ones you showed, and how expensive are they? This looks like a fantastic and easy project, you've got me interested!

What kind of laps are you using on this machine? Are they diamond?

I'm using the mounted ones from here. rocklady1.com/Products.htmlI'm happy with them but they are the only ones I have used so I really can't say how they compare.

Nice build! How do you keep the water from running down into the motor?

Thanks for the pics ed. I made one of these myself recently. I got another motor to make another one so I can run dual discs without changing out.
