Adrian, your cabbing machine is shaping up nicely. I am sure that it would give you years of trouble free performance. I see, by the size of your pulleys, that you decided to reduce the speed. From 1400 rpm at your motor to something around 1000 rpm on your cabbing machine shaft. Why? Usual recommended speeds for 6" wheels cabbing machines are around 1750rpm's. Another more thing I noticed. How wide is your resin diamond wheel? I suppose 1-1,5cm. It would be good to place one next to another, that way you would get one wider diamond wheel (2-3cm) - and grind your cabs easier. Maybe it is exactly what you planed. Good work all together. I am looking forward to seeing your cabbing machine finished. You are absolutely right about time consuming "little things" ;D. Believe me I know. Zoran

I was just thinking what a wonderful space that would be for a couple diamond wheels

Yes, Stefan, I understood what you wanted to say and I agree with you, but if I would had placed some wheels there, I was suposed to get the shaft out of the chassis every time when I wanted to change those weels.
Now, about the rotation speed, I planned to be about 900...1000 rot/min. Rockitman, you say that is too fast; Zoran, you say it is too slow. So I assume that, on average, my rotation speed is right ;D. If I won't be satisfied with the results, I'll change the driving wheel placed on the motor (bigger wheel, bigger rotation speed).
Zoran, about the resin diamond wheels, you're right about their thickness, it's 1 cm. My intention is to find another one or two wheels having different grit sizes.
Thanks again for all the coments and opinions. I placed today the machine on a wooden table, but I want to add a pulley stretcher before taking more pics

Hi! New pics! I've put the machine on a table and added the pulley stretcher; I also did the electrical circuits, with two switches: one for the motor and one for the water pump: I posted these pics above because now the functional part of the machine is most visible, after that it will be hidden by the splash guards. The splash guards are also in progress: Above you can see the wide tray (for the right side - grinding and polishing) and also the narrower tray (unbended). There's also a smaller guard, not for splashing, but for the pulley, as I consider it the most dangerous area in the machine. I don't want to happen this during operation : I also begun the work at the water tank, that's the test of the pump: Thanks for looking, Adrian

Hi, everyone! I've finished the cabbing machine today!!! ;D I thought I've finished it a few days ago, but when I turned on the water it splashed all over, so I had to add more lateral and frontal guards. Well, here it is: Two close-ups: the saw area: I think half of the working time was the designing, cutting and bending all those splash guards. Today I've bought two agate slabs which will volunteer for becoming my first cabs ... well ... sort of cabs Tomorrow I'll buy some super glue. I hope in a few days I'll be able to post in the cabs area. Thanks for looking and for all the advices and comments you've posted here from the beginning. Adrian

Thank you, all!
I think this thread would fit better in the Lapidary Tips area. So, Mark, If you consider it's right, please move it there.
Thank you,
Adrian
