My wife says I'm a freak. I prefer to think of myself as a perfectionist. Which I believe is okay... as long as you're not a freak about it! Moving on to today's update ~ So, I'm building this collection of tumblers. When I had just the first one running, where it was wasn't all that important. I knew that the tumblers would soon multiply, so I built a couple shelves over my other rock working equipment for them. Got to thinkin' and started to worry about what would happen if I had a lid leak over my other machines. What I came up with was... that would be no good! Came to that conclusion all by myself! So, what to do... Without further ado, I present my solution Put them in a Tupperware ™ type storage thing is what I came up with. But, I didn't want them sitting low in this thing and blocking air flow to the motors. So, I screwed together some 2x4s and made a stand of sorts. Okay, that's all well and good, but let's add something to keep the stand from moving around. Something like kitty litter. No, I don't have a cat... members.ij.net/captbob2112/T2.jpg[/img]Got the upper cross boards just right, so it's time for some tumbler bases Let's throw on some barrels! And get it up on the shelf. Notice the little white boxes that each cord plugs in? These tumblers don't have on/off switches, so I got these at Home Depot. Beats having to pull on the cord everytime you want to shut the tumbler down. One last picture and it's back to the lab! I've got a 15#er to load. ;D I'll never understand my wife...

I get called a freak all the time by my roommate, cause I *BUY* rocks. Of course... when he wants jewelry for his GF or his mom, who does he come to.... me.
I'm going to have to invest in some of those switches, I didn't know they existed. But that beats having to crawl under my workbench to unplug the tumblers.

Looks like a good idea to me. I have mine sitting all over the basement floor, sure wouldn't want to clean up the mess if they puked. Like those little switches too, those are great.

hey captian...be carefull of a few things you have going on...i aint no engineer or nutting ;D
your motors appear to be about 1/3 below the top of the tupperware unit....that is not good...if it is as appears.
air flow is critical to the life of a motor....if they are actually below the lip of the tupperware....i would raise them up to be just above the lip.
kitty litter....basicly oil dry....will give off a ton of dust...if air flow is allowed to flow over kitty litter....you will be adding a ton of dust to your motors....i would be thinking of filters myself....if motors are above kitty litter.
im just rambling...trying to thunk at the same time ;D...kev.

Great idea. You could use poly batting (for quilting) over the kitty litter to keep the dust down. I agree with bringing up the motors. Maybe by adding more litter?

Great ideas/setup, captbob, and great comments by everyone else (motors above lip, kitty litter dust).
The switches are in the category of "why didn't I think of that???"
Thanks!

This is a fantastic idea, Captbob! I have some metal shelves downstairs that I was thinking of putting my tumblers on, but didn't want to deal with the noise. Thanks for the photos!

Instead of starting yet another thread, thought I'd just add these last few pictures here. Keep in mind that I am more of a mineral specimen collector. During the past couple years I have kinda ignored the working with the rocks side and have been spending my time (and money) in a different area of the "hobby" - that is collecting quality specimens. Well, now I am back on the working with the rocks side of the fence. Got the HP 24" saw and a few tumblers going. My wife and I moved into our current house about 2 years ago, and since then I hadn't made the time to get my rock machines back up and running. Now with the tumblers I needed the trim saw and my wife is actually interested in learning how to make cabs (there IS a God!) so long story short, here's another part of the shop back in action. Looks like I've still got room for a couple more tumblers up there on that shelf! Got the water feed lines and drain lines all back in place and everything is powered up and ready to get dirty. Every shop needs a 55 gal barrel of mineral oil! I was thinking about putting it out back, but need to find out if it will expand in the Florida sun & heat. That's it for now, wife unit wants to go to Home Depot. Thanks for lookin'

Very impressive set up. Although I gotta say I wouldn't put my tumblers that high, mostly because I'm too short to reach them. Everything is also way too clean... get to messing things up!
