Will be heading to Delta, UT for rock collecting via highway 50 through Nevada and was hoping could get some collecting sites along the way. I have both Gem Trails and Rockhounding Nevada. Anyone have some sites where I can pick up a few rocks for polishing as well as my daughters school along the way. Was going to stop and get some fossils around the middlegate area and hit Garnet area. But would like some ideas, if anyone has them for other areas.
Thank you all again wildshack

I'd also stop at Grimes point for Wonderstone, although I belive that there is a claim staked on some of that, I think there are still some legal collecting areas there, you might stop into the 50/95 rock shop on the way into Fallon to check and get some local suggestions.
Austin is also supposed to be a rockhound's mecca, lots of colorful fluorites and stuff in mine tailings around that area.
I've driven 50 across NV many times, mostly before getting back into rocks, it used to take me like 8 hours to get from home to Ely, now I think it would take me more like 8 days knowing all the great collecting sites along the way...

Yes, I have collected at some of the more western spots before. Will you also be going to the Utah trip as well? Any good suggestions for the Austin area, as the furthest east I have collected is the middlegate area?
Thanks again, wildshack

I only learned about Austin from a club field trip report I stumbled across a while ago, I am hoping to make the Utah excursion, although my schedule is filling up fast and I need to save up vacation time for trips to Europe and Montana in July. We should stay in touch though as it would be fun to caravan out there with a few of us- maybe even carpool a little if gas gets as stupid expensive as they are predicting...

Yes, when I was in fallon, the smaller (one on the left going east) was very friendly and helpful as well.

I spent more than a month in the Ruth/Ely area... But its been a long time ago. Seems right around Ruth, maybe just before you get to Ruth, there's a "peak" on the north side of the road. There's a pretty good road, and a picnic area at the end of it... Some pretty nice garnets in that area. Everything else we did was farther off 50... and less interesting...

Yeah, Austin has a lot of different gems, but there are a LOT of claims there. Just make sure that you don't rockhound on a claim, as that carries stiff penalties if you're caught.
