I just finished a batch in my 12lb. Model b of various jaspers and other rocks I just threw in. I did the usual 7days of each 60,220,500 and then Cerium. Usually after cerium I run overnight with Borax powder..........well I was out of borax so I used 1/4 cup of Cascade Complete dishwashing powder...Wow after 2 hours it had scrubbed all the film and rubber from the barrel off and left a great shiny finish. Just thought I would let you guys know.

Yeah, I mention Cascade in a number of my post. It works great. It only takes about and hour to clean the rocks up really good. You can use an old toothbrush to clean out any cracks too.

What about all the warnings about not using detergents in the barrel because it will rot the rubber or whatever? I've been afraid to disregard the directions.

I guess I missed those warnings, I read that most everyone uses Borax a a final cleaner....Borax is a natuyral detergent. Im sure if you left strong detergent the high PH would effect the rubber lining eventualy....but as a final cleaner for a couple of hours I dont see how it could really hurt it. Think about this you door seals on your car are made out of the same type stuff and the car wash doesnt cause these to fall apart.

The warning about detergent is refering to laundry detergent. Not dish washer detergent. I actually had a barrel explode on me one time. It was my first tumbling experience and I made the mistake of using laundry detergent. Big mistake! The barrel started to erode and left a black film on my rocks. To make matters worst, the lid poped of in the middle of the night and spilled the contents all over the floor. I temporarily gave up the hobby after that. 3 years went by till I picked it back up again...

I had someone tell me to use cornmeal as a buffer. You think laundry detergent goes splat, wait untill you experience cornmeal. I ended up retexturing my wall as a result of the experience. We had just finished that room and I set up the tumbler. Organics decompose and produce wonderful odors. It sprayed out of a leak in rotary fashion for the eight hours we slept. The texture was fresh and unpainted so cleaning wiped the texture off the sheetrock. I do like the idea of Cascade. I would imagine a small amount for a wetting agent would work. I am going to try it for the final tumble on my aventurine. Borax is ok, but it does have some limits.
