The big saw club that is ;D Picked up this baby last night. She's an 18" HP. I've got a little cleaning up to do, and the switch needs to be replaced (it won't turn off, the wiring's kinda rigged.. might just be wired wrong?) but plugged in it runs great and everything's tight. I brought a sharp pencil with me to the guy's house and clamped it in the vise and ran it along the length of the blade (a trick Mel suggested) and it never lost contact. She's missing a section of the belt guard and one of the wheels to roll it (dang she's heavy!). Ain't she purty though? Now it's just a matter of finding the time to get 'er cleaned up, fix the switch, fill her with oil and start slabbin! Oh yeah, I gotta learn how to use it too LOL. I'm sure I'll be bombarding y'all with questions here shortly.. heh I gotta slab saw!!! ;D

Congratulations! Looks like lots of fun in your future. I just got a big honkin' saw recently myself. You may want to read my past saw threads as I think I've managed to break most everything possible in a quickness. I'm looking forward to not being the only one here now asking newbie saw owner questions! ;D

Thanks Capt Bob! I'm happy to take over your rookie spot I remember seeing the monster you got and it's trip to the back yard. Man I know how heavy this one is, I can only imagine what yours weighs! So.. where can you get switches and Highland Park parts ?

What do you need, I can probably give you the part #
I have a copy of the instruction manual, schematic of the saw and parts list. One of these days I'll get around to making copies... (holding your breath won't help!)

Congrats on joining the cub Beef! That saw is a beautiful thing. It's just breathtaking. Looks like there's not much rust either so getting it cleaned up won't be too messy. It looks like all the parts are intact too. I think that space in the belt guard may be normal.
Looks like we got almost the same saw buddy. Mine is a HP 16 inch saw. The carriage is a little different, but otherwise they are cousins! Thanks for posting the photos too, because now I know how the blade guard fits on. I could never figure it out. Welome to the big saw club Brian! I can't wait to see the "after" photos. Got a name for her picked out yet? Steve

Cool Brian. I wouldn't bother cleaning it up too good, just the mechanical parts, because in a week it's going to be right back to being filthy. Just go to Radio Shack and buy a switch with the right amperage rating. It will probably cost 1/2 of what DP will charge. The most important thing to know about slab saws is to make sure the rock is secure in the vise. Use small pieces of wood to wedge between the rock and the face of the vise to give the rock more contact to the vise. Then grab the rock and yank on it. If it moves at all, tighten it some more. Then after the first cut or two, tighten the vise some more. The second most important thing is the cost of replacing the blade, but if you paid attention to the most important thing to know, you shouldn't have to worry about this.

Nice saw. The belt guard is not missing just pre-safety laws.

Hey thanks folks! Adrian, everything I've cut to this point has been either on the WF or my 10" HP saw by hand. Friday afternoon I stopped and picked up 5 gallons of tech grade white oil 70. We worked on the house Saturday, but yesterday I had all afternoon to play. I got 'er set up, cleaned up a little and filled with oil. I chose a nice chunk we found out near Brenda last year and got it secured in the vise with wood wedges and such and was ready to go. I figured her name was gonna be Angel or B*tch, depending on how this test run went. So here's a shot of Angel ;D with the Brenda chunk And my first few slabs! Of course my oil is nice bloody shade of Brenda now, but oh man whatta blast! Only issue is getting a working switch so I don't have to unplug after each cut. Thanks all for the advice and encouragement! ;D
