Well I finally got around to finishing up some cabs, darn woodturning was getting in the way. These got a better shine than my last batch so I must be getting a little bit better, or chose better rocks. I still end up with flat spots on some of them. I use a magnifier but I think I just need new eyes. Any critiques or comments are welcome. Mahogany obsidian from Connrock. This one shined up pretty nicely at 14k diamond but it seemed to loose some shine when I went up to 50k. Missouri agate from Connrock. Ohio flint. My first attempt at round. It looks worse in person. Its only about 3/4" in diameter. I would like to get good at these so I can set them into the wood wine bottle stoppers that I make. Ohio flint again, I think this one is my favorite. Poppy jasper. The other side has some pink poppies but I thought the green vein was very interesting so I made this the front. I may grind the back too. Unknown agate. Tiger iron. Its small. Only 1" long. Thanks for looking. Tony M

Looking good, Tony! I love the shapes you've chosen for each of the stones!!!! I think your favorite is my favorite, too. I really love the Missouri agate, though.
I've found that the key to avoiding flat spots is to really keep the stone moving. Rock that baby as you work!

Nice job Tony. With obsidian, sometimes you can overheat the cab which will cause the stone to get micro fractures on or just under the surface, and the more you try to polish out the fractures, the worse they get. That's happened to me on some rainbow obsidian. The easiest way to cut your circles for the wine bottle stoppers is to decide what diameter you need, then buy a core bit drill and cut your blanks with that. I tried the method of chucking the dop stick in a drill, and although it did work, next time I will use a longer dop stick because I got water in the chuck and when I went to use my drill, the chuck was rusted in place. But the core bit is easiest method.

Thanks for all of the compliments. Titania, I am do keep the stone moving but obviously not well enough. Adrian, I remember that cab. I had this one working for a few months so maybe you inspired the shape. Ed, I will get a core drill. I was just experimenting with this one. I have another that turned out so bad that I wont show it to anyone.

I like them all. Your doing a great job on your shapes. I know how hard it is to keep them round, it's tough! I've been looking for the core bits. The only ones I've found are too small in dia. I'd like to find a 1" and 2" dia bit. If you find any, let me know please.
