I guess I'll just jump in here and introduce myself. I've been reading and learning for a few months and I've just been in awe of some of the skills you've shown and the rocks that you all have found. My wife and I are retired and about 18 months ago on our way home from a trip to the Oregon coast we stopped to let our dogs out for a break. While they played my wife picked up a pretty rock (Mahogany Obsidian) and asked me what it was. That was the beginning of it. As soon as we got home, we bought a tumbler and it's been all rock hunting trips as often as we can since then. We're not anything but newbies, but we're anxious to learn, and this seems to be the best place to do that.

Welcome rbush!!!! You've found a great place to get all of your questions answered. Rock hunting trips are a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, while getting a bit of exercise in too!

Welcome to the group!! I can so relate to the exercise comment, I blame it on my daughter for moving away, she was my hounding partner. (Gotta blame it on someone don't I?) ;D

Thanks for the Welcome 181lizard and Cher. Oregon may have been my downfall, but the only regret I have about it is we didn't find that rock on the way out to the coast, rather than on the way back. All the places that I've learned about since then...... Oh well, kind of gives us a reason to go back, doesn't it? Cher, my wife has family in your area, around Minneapolis, it's a beautiful place. I don't know what kinds of rocks you have there, I was busy fishing the time we went to visit. I do know that to get there I have to drive all the way across Wyoming and through the Black Hills. It could take a couple of weeks to get there next time. As for my rockhounding partner, my wife was pretty restricted last summer. She was rehabbing from knee replacement surgery and couldn't go very far from camp or the truck. This year she's raring to go. She's been walking 5 miles + on the treadmill every day (better than me) and is feeling great. Now if we could get rid of all this damn snow...... ;D Anyway, thanks again!
Roger

John, please don't get the idea that I'm not aware of what is available here locally. My wife and I take advantage of it at every opportunity. She loves the geode beds at Dugway and I am more partial to the Topaz Mt. area. We try to go to every place here in Utah that we can, but at least once or twice a year I love to show her someplace new. I spent most of my youth with my father, fishing and prospecting all over the mountain west area. I really enjoy sharing that with her and if we find some really cool rocks at the same time, that's a bonus! Thanks for the welcome.

Thank you Tony. The pictures of your Challis trip are just beautiful and are of one of my favorite ares to visit. My dad started taking me fishing in the Challis area when I was about 11, and I fell in love with it. I've gone back to visit as often as I can over the years, and took my sons, too. Until last year, though, my focus has been on the river and fishing, so I never knew about the treasures waiting in the hills. Last summer I had the pleasure of taking my oldest son and his wife and my grandkids camping in the Stanley area. My wife and I took one afternoon for ouselves and ran over to Challis for some rockin'. We found some pink fluorite west of Challis and some tumbler sized agate and one nice quartz crystal just off of Road creek south of Challis. Next time we'll be by ourselves, and I hope to spend several days and do a little more exploring. Maybe we'll even be lucky enough to find some rocks as beautiful as the ones you showed us!

Well, next time you head up to Challis to go hounding, let me know and maybe I can get a day or 2 off and join ya. Theres some good hounding in Mackay too, just harder to find.

Roger, perhaps your wife's family knows someone with a gravel pit where you can hunt for Lake Superior Agates. I would love to hunt down in that area but can never find any place to go. I did find one gravel pit that lets you hunt for like $6 a day but have never found any others.

Sounds great, Tony! Right now we're aiming at the Delta trip, and then as soon as we get back, the wife is flying to New York for her youngest son's wedding. I'm going to wait and see what she does to our budget before I plan any more trips. He is marrying a young lady with 4 children, making her an instant Grandma. I shudder to think how long it may take to recover as she's been waiting for this for a long time. ;D I've got 6 grandkids and 1 great grandkid myself, and she's been great with them, but these are hers! They'll probably feel like they hit the lottery. ;D

Cher, that's a great idea. The last time we wre there was for her uncle's 80th birthday, and judging from the number of people that showed up for the party, somebody should know something!
