I had a fellow rockhead who is also quite a craftsman with wood make me a couple of 8" laps out of 3/8 Baltic Birch plywood. If you ever tried to get a good polish on jade it can be a challenge. So I charged one of the wood laps with 50,000 diamond paste and got a good polish. I ordered some 100,000 diamond paste from Arrowhead and will see what kind of insane polish I can get.

I use a maple wood lap with Rapid Polish with similar results on Nephrite Jade. I think if I used diamond polish I could get an even better polish. I think the hard wood wheel is the difference, though. Bob

Excellent polish! I work some jade and have a hard time also. The only way I achieve good results is pressure and heat. I wear out belts faster but it works for me. I would love to use a wood lap but not sure where I can get one. Any ideas where one can buy one?

If you don't have any friends into woodworking you might tray a community college or talk to some high school shop teachers. Maybe a custom cabinet shop can make you one for not a lot of money. My friend made sure that the holes were dead center. He started out with an 8" square piece of wood then drew lines from corner to corner. He then drew out the circle with a compass. Then he center punched where the lines intersected and drill a 1/2" hole. Then he cut away most of the wood outside of the circle. Then he mounted the the wood on a 1/2" bold and somehow mounted it so he could sand the lap perfectly round. And accurate he was. I spun it up the first time full speed and not a hint of vibration. A lot better than some imported diamond laps I have...

Hmm Tony, friends into woodworking? Sound like anybody we know? ;D Another idea might be to use a spool polisher. Steve

Thanks for the info Rick. Awhile back Bob Rush gave me a demonstration on one and it worked well. I would like to have one but don't have a lot of room in my garage. I am sure I could fit it in somewhere.
Steve your gonna laugh but I didn't think of Ed! Thanks, hes probably making me one as we speak, he has a excellent wood working shop in his garage. I am sure he could make a killer one. Just got to figure out how to make it into a arbor.

Very nice polish! I have a small boat shop, and can make up wood laps if needed. PM me on size etc. I am in the Pacific Northwest. Woody

Psst, hey Tony, mount it on your flat lap! Would you like baltic birch ply, hard or soft maple, Cherry, walnut, mahogany, or rosewood?

Super shine; I have been having trouble with the shine on the jade I have been doing. Could get it right with the novas and tumbling was even worse. I'll have to try the wood.

So here's a question about wood in general - on leather and resin you have to worry about heat build up. Does the wood avoid those problems? Do you use the face of the wood like you would on an endplate, or do you use the edge of the wood like you would on a belt? (Did that make sense?) I may have to bat my eyes at my Dad...who'll probably tell me to make it myself.

Errrr, ummmm, I'm a woodturner. Hence the name tonyterner. I actually have an order in right now from someone here for some flat laps. I would be more than willing to some for others here. Just send me a pm and we can talk about it.

akansan,
I used 50,000 diamond and the stone did get warm while I was polishing. I've got some 100,000 ordered from Arrowhead that should be delivered mid week. I'll load up my other wood lap with that and see what kind of insane shine I can get.
