If the diamond disks you have fit the machine, go for it. The 400 rpm is enough. I made some cabs on a machine having a flat lap with about 300...350 rpm and came out fine. The only problem is if you can add a water supply on that disk without damaging the machine.

For 50 bucks more you can get a four wheel Lortone arbor sans the wheels. Then once you have that get an old washing machine motor to run it with. Should be able to get that free. 50 cents worth of plastic tubing and a container of some sort and you have water. Get some Chinese diamond wheels for 60 bucks each with shipping... then when you feel rich again you can get some expando drums and belts. YOu'll be much happier in the long run. Back in the 70's I used to sell boots made up there in Flowery Branch. I think they eventually went out of business or changed hands or something. Made good boots. Dont remember the name. Tony

Personally, I would rather buy an arbor and source a motor as Tony suggested. I think you'll be so much happier in the long run. I run those "Perfect" brand diamond wheels on my cabbing machine, and I have been very pleased with their performance. They aren't as cheapie as the made in china wheels.

I originally started trying to do some lapidary work on one of those sharpener type grinders. Mine was made by Delta. The brown wheel on the top is way too soft. I couldn't even keep it straight when I was just using it for sharpening. I'm not sure what size the spindle is. 1/2 inch is what most diamond laps are.
