I was driving down an alley today going to a job and I saw a chunk of rock sticking out of the ground that caught my eye. I stopped and went and checked it out, and look at what I found buried in the road. ![](http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z229/catmandewe/Garyscabs2006Medium.jpg) I first thought this was a piece of wonderstone, but as I pulled it out and kind of cleaned it off, I dont think it is, it has some nice banding, more indicitive of onyx, but it seems harder than that. I am not sure what it is, but it sure is pretty. ![](http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z229/catmandewe/Garyscabs2002Medium.jpg) closeup of the banding ![](http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z229/catmandewe/Garyscabs2003Medium.jpg) picture of the back ![](http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z229/catmandewe/Garyscabs2001Medium.jpg) I have never had a piece of pet palm, but from the pictures that I have seen on here, this looks like it may be. ![](http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z229/catmandewe/Garyscabs2005Medium.jpg) If anyone has any better ideas on what these are, I would appreciate any input. Have a great day.......................Tony

Nice find. Looks like an onyx or travertine "onyx". Exterior looks like some of our local marble. How about scratching it with a knife?

I threw the "pet palm" in the saw tonight, and it is solid black inside, except for a white vein. (looks like a bird in flight) The pet palm lookin crust is only a crust. Not cool enough for pictures. Never know, it may get better the farther in I get.
I did the scratch test on the "onyx" and the knife left a black mark and dulled the blade, but the black mark wipes off, no scratch.

It sure looks like palm to me in the one photo with the black specks. I have also seen palm wood that is black on the inside when cut.... as a matter of fact I bought some just like that on eBay a few months ago. The black interior of the palm is so dark that you can barely see the speckled appearance typical of palm.

Wow...if I were to head into a local alley, I'd probably be lucky not to get mugged or step on an old needle. I doubt I'd find any rocks...at least that aren't of the crack variety.

I concur that the second one looks like palm. Also, from what I've read, the "eyes" only show up when the stone is cut in the "proper" orientation. What is proper, I dunno. So maybe give it a 90* rotation in a couple of different directions and see what shows up?

I will rinse it as soon as my hose thaws out. My wife frowns on big rocks in the bath tub.
I turned it 90 degrees, and the same thing, pure black. I took one of them and cleaned it off and looked, there are some little orbs in there, but they are black too, so they are very hard to see. Oh and when I cut it, it smells like someone cut the cheese in my saw. Horrible smelling stuff!
Hopefully I will get a piece of that "onyx" cut in the next day or two.

Here is a photo of black(ish) tumble polished Palm. It is about 4" across. Maybe this will help identify yours. ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/Palm166.jpg) Bob

Just not too far west, tonyterner. I don't find much "local" stuff here and am resigned to buying off ebay. Our beach rocks tend to be granite. I've found some nice stuff in my parents' neighborhood yards in the larger sized rock covering. Pet wood and even agate, but nothing really colorful.
