Went to Neport Oregon today to hunt beach agates at Lost Creek, Agate Beach. Not good findings they seemed to be picked over very well. I drove from Salem, and I would save the gas. Keith

Keith,
I went down in early June at a minis tide and for the first time at the park there war rocks showing, any other time i had to go north for a mile or so. i did fine a few though the sand was deep and the finer rock was on top. the hard pan should be less then a foot under the loose sand at the high tide mark.
Then a went to the tide pools in Lincoln city oh boy it was great hard to believe this time of year. the area where you can drive on the beach.

Another good place you're unlikely to know about is the beach in front of the Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City. I worked there two winters ago and usually came up with 2-3 lbs of small agate per day, including the occasional piece of petrified wood.
Moolack Beach is all sand right now unless I'm sadly mistaken. I went there last week for a look, sand as far as the eye could see. Fogarty Creek between Salishan and Depoe Bay sometimes gives up good agates but it's also heavily trafficked and picked-over.
I'm currently working in Depoe Bay on the Spouting Horn restaurant, which is getting new siding and a lot of repairs. If anyone needs a beach report, post up and I will try to get out to the beach in question for a look at it.

The best days for finding good agates is after rough weather and then a few quiet days with sweeping waves which helps to build up weirs. The agates seem to get thrown up on top near the hightide markand some will bounce beyond.
Good luck with your hunt

I grew up in Tillamook on the N Oregon coast and we would go walk the beaches from Cape Mears out toward the jetty. Good gravelbeds churning up lots of agates esp after a winter storm. Also short beach btw Cape Mears litehouse and Oceanside was a good place. Bit of a steep trail from the road but good hunting there. also jasper and jade can be found at the South end of Cape lookout park beaches. Good luck

Bandon beaches are real good if rocks are exposed, lots of petrified myrtle wood....
