While in New Orleans earlier this month, I went to a small jewlery shop that has a lot of LA Opal. HE also had some slabs and rough. I could not affort the really high grade stuff, but I got a couple nice pieces for $60 to $80 per piece, and will make some presents for my family. Oh, and a bola for me. (click for full size) The little one also has a small amount of red fire when tilted just right. It is about 1.75 x 0.50, but is 5/8" thick. It was intended to be cut for a matched pair. I hope to get matching pendants for my sister and mother, who also come form Louisiania. The larger slab only has purple flash but is about 3.75x2.75 an d should yeild a bolo and maybe a small pendant too.

I recently met the guy that discovered this stuff. Not too far from where I live, but I've got my hands full with all the pet wood.

Very pretty. The purple stone with the flashes is really different.

Yes, CHer, this is the most I have ever spent on slabs. But, a friend of my mom's got a few finished pieces about 8 years ago, payin gseveral thousand dollars with the gold setting an all. My mom has spoken fondly of the material several times over the years.
Titania, there are almost no pits. One or two very small spots with a little hole. It is a quartzite type of grains that has been cemented with beautiful clear opal instead of agate.
Tony, I hope the current popularity for purple lasts a while, because if I make a bolo, I will need to wear it for years to come anywhere near getting my money's worth out of the rock.

I told myself that I would nothave to spend money on a xmas gift for mom next Dec, and justified it that way. Now my sister, she is just going to owe me. I plan to show up at her mansion in San Antonio and install myself inthe guest suite for a week sometime.
