The Black River around Lesterville, Missouri is a great place to find lots of pretty rocks to tumble. My father-in-law owned the Riversedge Campground for 8 years. It had a huge gravel/rocky beach. I haven't been there in many years but I'm sure there are still tons of colorful rocks in the river! (The area was 'canoe heaven' and there were lots of campgrounds right on the river.)
I don't know the names of most of the rocks I brought home, but there were various sizes of drusy type quartz clusters (water-worn) and some reddish ones that may be jasper. Both of those took a good polish. Others had stripes/layers, spots, etc. and almost any color you could want.
I found a 2" chuck of Galena in a parking lot once, no doubt from one of the lead mines in the area. I was also hiking in the hills one day and came across a filled in trench. In the red clay that was thrown to the side I found a few mostly undamaged quartz clusters. I also have a lot of drusy quartz with the tiny crystals that sparkle like diamonds in the sun. I don't remember exactly where I found those.
Later, jeri

Hi -- I haven't been around a lot recently. If you've said where you live, I missed it. Our rock club meets Friday at Wash U Geology building. I've picked up rocks around Lesterville as well as a lot of places in SEMO. There's lots of collecting! Just a few weeks ago I found a chunk of really pretty rock that appears to be mozarkite in a creek in Jefferson county -- go figure. Hope you stick around here. I can never find enough local collectors to talk to.
