I think this is petrified wood but not sure. It's one of the rocks that hubby got from a yard that he cleaned. Dot

Could be. That western wood is hard for me to identify. The yellow portions look like wood, but the pink and red does not. Nice and strange slab Dot.

thanks Curt. It's actually a big chunk. I only took a picture of the face of it. When I get home I'll take pics of the other angles.

Looks like it. I look forward to seeing it from other angles.

It looks like wood to me too. Especially the yellow-brown areas, like Curt said.

Thanks guys. I was going to take more pics last night but hubby made me clean up my bead room to make room for the flat lap that we bought. I'm really anxious to get cabbing again.

Isn't wood amazing? It shows up so many different ways.

It looks like wood to me, but I have never seen a section like the white and pink or any with such an abrupt and dramatic color change. My guess is that this is a piece of wood that was partially rotted when it petrified, or possibly it was bashed on the white/pink section (that could explain all the tiny lines that look like healed fractures), and then petrified. I cut up an interesting looking piece of wood that had textured looking and wood looking layers. A fossil expert at the club said that's what was going on with it -- partially rotted then petrified. It's a great looking piece!
