While I don't have any experience with this type of saw, the same guy is selling those same plans here in the States on eBay as well. I contacted 5 of the most recent purchasers of those plans and they thought they were well drawn, clear & easy to follow. No-one at that time had built the saw though. They all thought the plans were well worth the money.

I've got one, Simon, and I like it. But I don't like the looks of that one - lotta bending over in a tub.
When you blow up the pic, it looks like the blade is fixed, and the swing arm is the vise holding the rock. Just the opposite of how they're usually built - fixed rock and swinging blade, like a chop saw.

I used to have a 14" Lortone swing arm type and it worked well but was hard to clean, the oil was pumped to the blade and the pump often failed and it threw oil everywhere. The plus was the blade was dropped on the rock so it tended to make a nice straight interface with the rock and the gravity feed worked pretty well. I really like the way the one you've pictured is enclosed. That would eliminate lots of the mess.....Mel

I don't know about this saw but my brother in law has a Lortone 14" drop saw and he likes it pretty well. Is is a little but he put a lexan inclosure around it and that cut down on the mess.
I guess the question I have about the e-Bay listing in is the statement ---------- Lapidary Cooling Oil [glow=red,2,300]including a great new alternative[/glow] Dose anyone know what the great new alternative is?

I asked the guy what the cost is to build the saw. I'll probably buy the plans soon. This is what he told me: Hello! Thanks for the e-mail. I'll try to give you my best guesses. The following won't include any taxes or postage and are based on what a decent deal price would be in Canada but in US Dollars . Arbor - 50 Blade - 60 Plywood - 25 Motor - 50 Various metal parts - 30 Pillow blocks and 2 hole blocks - 30 Fiberglassing - 25 Screws, bolts etc - 10 or less. Lubricating oil - (Pella or equivalent) - 40
I'm not sure how close some of these guesses may be but I would think it would be possible to do it within such parameters.

Have you bought any good plywood lately? $25 was right about twenty years ago . . . for three sheets of 1/2" crap CDX. Rich

I bought a set of the plans, they're very good and yes the vice is pulled across the blade.
Only thing I may have a problem getting is the arbor for the blade although a cut down motorcycle wheel spindle should do the trick.
I'll take pics of the project as I'm going along.
