Hey, Everyone...
I sure am glad I found you guys. I've been looking around a bit, and it looks like I've found the right group to help me get going!
Here's the scoop...
I just returned from a trip to Turkey where I picked up some marvelous pieces of marble from the Aegean Sea near the ancient city of troy. The stones are already beautifully smooth, but I would like to polish them and see how they turn out.
I would like to preserve the shape if possible and not lose too much of the size.
I was at a very reputable hobby store yesterday who had a Thumler's Tumbler Model B that was just returned by someone who supposedly didn't use it like they thought they would. It is in truly mint condition, and I got the unit for just under $80, so I was thrilled with the price.
HOWEVER, when I started looking here, it looks like maybe a Vibe polisher might be a better option for me, so now I've got several questions that I am looking to find answers for...
1. Can Marble be polished effectively?
2. Is a tumbler the right tool for already smooth marble?
3. Since the stones are already smooth, am I okay to start with a pre-polish type of grit, or should I still use something more abrasive?
4. I have a total of 7 stones with diameters of 1" to 2.5" that I would like to polish. Should I do them all at once, or should I do a couple at a time until I get the hang of it?
5. From what I'm reading, it appears since my barrel won't be near full with just a few stones, I might need some type of tumbling media in with the rocks. What would be the best choice for me, and how much would I need for my current tumbler (or another tumbler if I should use a vibrating tumbler)?
6. How do I know how much grit to use for each stage of polishing? The directions that came with the tumbler were truly no help to me whatsoever.
Thanks to each of you for your help. I'm looking forward to getting started, but I want to start out correctly rather than simply rushing the process.
