Howdy all. I have been asked to slab a bunch of stuff for some people, and was wondering what does a person charge? I really have no idea, and don't want to scare them away with a wacked out price but then I want it to be fair for me. Do you charge per slab, or by pound? Thanks, MSJ

I'm not sure what a fair price is, but i know my local rock shop charges .15-.17 cents per sqare inch, depending on the material, different hardness will wear out a blade at differnt rates i believe, hopefully someone w/ more knowledge will chime in.

Depending on the size of the rock, some of us do it for one or two slabs from each rock. If you do it for money, I don't think it's worth it. Blades are expensive!!

i charge 5.00 a slab. But most common, is i get half of the rock i am cutting, if its nice stuff. It may sound bitchy but i don't want to cut geodes, so those i make it 5.00 a slice. It works for me.

Local rock shop charges $8.00 per cut. He will cut anything up to 12" for that price. Comes in handy when I have rock to big for my 16" saw.

Thanks for the help guys. These guys want chert cut for their flintknapping, and most of it is pretty bland so I have no use for any slabs or rock off of it. Therefore this cutting will be for money. Unless they bring in some really nice stuff. Then I might highgrade some. LOL MSJ

Another thing to keep in mind is the hardness of the rock that you're cutting. Stuff like Brazilian agates will put a hurt'n on your blade, and they take a while longer per cut.

I believe, for comparison, that Richardson's latest price is $0.43 per square inch.

Most the cutters I've seen go at least 25 cents per square inch or cut on shares. When I cut for shares for my buddy, he gets the cutoff end and heel plus every other slab. We take turns who gets to pick the first slab.....Mel
