Here are photos of a 2nd pendant I have made with a freeform cab I cut and shaped from West Virginia fossil coral. As usual, my freeform pendant cabs are tumble finished after shaping on a 120g wheel. These were don in Lot-O tumbler, 220g 500Fg 1200g AO - about 30 hours in each stage and 3 days in AO polish. I fit the top of this cab for this fluted bail because I thought the flutes in the bail would complement the coral flowers. But It was a lot of silver/gray. I gave this to a friend who put it on a shiny silver snake-link style chain. More silver/gray. I got a little sad each time she wore it. SO, I ordered this antique silver popcorn style chain. I hoped the dark elements in the chain would give enough contrast. I think it works, although I still wonder if I should not place small black wood beads on either side of the bail. (click for larger) The 1st cab I made from this material I gave to Jamie when I went to Burro Creek. I used leather on that one to get a little more contrast/color. The bail was also antique silver because shiny silver did not have enough contrast with the stone. I think possibly this is the more attractive piece of coral because there is less brown/rust color and just the tan and blue coral. (click for larger) Do you think I need dark beads? Which shape/cab do you like better. I have enjoyed making cutoff ovals. I feel like it is my own style. But the more traditional look of the fluted bail is nice too.

Both are beautiful. It is all a matter of taste but I love the first cab I think because the brown makes the coral pattern stand out and the antique chain is perfect. I just love the pattern. Did you create the bail on the second cab?

I generally avoid using super glue or epoxy, but the first bail completes great the cab's shape, it's like a natural finishing. I like the second one too. Beautiful bail, I like iys design for fitting the chain curve.

Very nice free forms. Where did you buy the second bail?

The 2nd bail is available from Firemountaingems, and I have also seen it on ebay - sometimes about $1 cheaper.

Deb, Nice coral! And thanks. Now I know what I got in a bunch of tumbling rough I bought on eBay a year or so ago... Rick

Rick, of 8lbs I pulled from the river, most did not have distinct pattern (blue chert with very faint coral) or had coral-type holes deep into the nodule. Only form one nodule did I get the nice slab that gave me these two pieces. I might get an additional cab from one of the smaller nodules if/when I cut them. FYI, I've posted this before, but here is my dad and I in the river in near Hillsboro WV

I like 'em both! I think whatever you decide to add, or not, will work! Tony
