Hi, I've done a bit of searching, but haven't found any old threads about Thumler motors. I have an AR1, 3lb rotary tumbler. The motor is making a lot more noise - I had stopped it to recharge a load 2 days ago and tried to start it up last night. It makes the noise even when the drive shaft and belt are removed. The load I was going to re-start is about 4 lbs, rocks and water and barrel.... Wait a minute. Did I just say I was running 4 lbs on my 3 lb tumbler??!! I think I just found my problem. But what can I do about the motor? The noise goes away (or greatly reduces) if I pick up the whole frame and point the drive shaft towards the ground. It gets worse if I point the drive shaft to the sky. The tumbler was new last August, and I have oiled the motor with one drop in each port (there are 2) every month or so. Maybe every 2 months. Can I take it apart and repair or is it too late? How do I get the motor casing open? I've never tried to remove anything like those strange clips. What am I looking for once I get inside? In the future, I need to change how I compile my loads. My tumbler doesn't seem much more than 2/3 full, but I do have a lot of small pieces in there, to help distribute the grit. Maybe too many, if that volume weighs that much? Any help is greatly appreciated! Amy

I don't think I've seen any problems on the board with new Thumlers! I think you might have over oiled it. (Is that possible?)
I run mine a bit heavy as well, but I haven't had any problems with them. If it was new less than one year ago, I'd contact who you purchased it from.

Ronda is correct. Contact the dealer. If that doesn't work call Thumler's at 800-225-1017. They should help you. And, yes, a lot of motors are ruined by over-lubrication. Similar motors I used in the refrigeration trade ran 24 hrs a day and said either oil every 6 or 12 months. You can't hurt the bearings so oil at the start of every batch. If the motor has not run in a long time a drop or two would be ok or if used regularly about twice a year would be fine. It sounds like your shaft is moving back and forth in the motor. There should be thrust washers in each end to keep it centered. If you can get the motor apart you could conceivably replace them. You can also try centering the shaft in the motor and moving the motor pulley in or out to try to keep the shaft centered. The pulleys should be lined up anyway.

I contacted Shawn at the Rock Shed (my dealer/retailer), and in no time he has called Thumlers/Tru Square. The motor is under warranty and they will send a new one out to me.
Whew!
So when I get my new motor, should I give it one drop of oil or wait 6 months? Any other checks I should make before I start it up?
Thanks again! Amy

Flip a coin, Amy. ;D
The instructions say to oil sparingly at start-up and once a month after that.
My AR-2 has never been oiled in three years and runs just fine.

It wouldn't hurt to put one or two drops of a light weight oil when you install it.
