I am getting ready to polish some mix in my UV-10, but I want to make sure I am using the correct amount. I know that The Rock Shed recommends 3 ounces of polish. Is that by volume or mass? If I decided to try some Tin Oxide, would that impact the amount of polish needed?
Thanks!
Chris

Hi Chris,
I have a UV-18 and so far I've used the recommended amount of 4 oz. (by weight), which seems like a heck of a lot of polish. People with Lot-O 4 lb. tumblers get by with 1/2 tsp, which would be 2 1/2 tsp in the UV-10. For my next load I'm going to try reducing to the UV-18 equivalent and see how it goes.
Word to the wise: make sure your bowl is full and use plenty of small pellets to help carry the grit. I spoke to Art at True Square (maker of the Thumler's tumblers) and he said you should fill it up to 1/2 inch of the nut in the bowl (I've got mine loaded even higher).
Hope that helps, Chuck

Snivlem do you use Connrock's recipe in the UV-10? I'm using his steps, but with the quantities from the Rock Shed. I'd love to be able to cut back on the amount of grit.

Yeah, I use 2 teaspoons of 120/220, 1/2 teaspoon of 500 (which I usually recharge with another 1/2 about 12 hours in), and a big fat teaspoon of AO. The key is that I only wet the rocks then dump out the water, and if I need more water, I put it in in TINY increments. I think the only way for this to work is with as little water as possible. I only recharge if i feel the slurry and there is no grit left, and that is usually in the middle stage. The rockshed's directions are actually thumler's directions, and they call for way too much grit. Do not let it get dry, though, that sucks, and you'll have to take a step or 2 back.
I will try to find a link to another thread in here that discusses this.
I was afraid the tiny amounts would not work. but my first batch using less grit came out splendid!
Good luck!
