My next door neighbor caught me at lunch today and asked if "that thing was going to be running all the time"- seems he's having a hard time relaxing on his deck while my slab saw is slicing up jasper.
I have to admit I might have been a little out of control- running it until 10-11PM and firing it up first thing in the morning about 6:30-7.
Guess I might need to make room and move it from under the porch into the basement....

Basement sounds more year round useful. So, what is his deck schedule anyway?

I do not know how loud your saw is but as far as I am concerned they make a peaceful humming sound as they grind through. Very relaxing.

Tell him you were leaning towards the gas powered model, but chose the electric model because you were thinking of your neighbors.

Just go buy em' some ear plugs, a bag of cotton balls, and some sleeping pills. He should get a hint that nothing gets in the way of your saw and rocks! If he doesn't get a clue...show him one of your rocks up close and personal.....a soft tap over the head should do it! Of course...I'm not a violent person...but I'm glad no one has complained about my stuff. Steve

I am pretty careful how often and when I use my tile saw. I have to use it outside and my next-door neighbours bedroom windows are only about 2 1/2 metres away. Generally I only use my saw once a week for a couple of hours. I do not work Mondays so I tend to use it then, during the middle of the day when I figure most people will be at work or school.
As much as I enjoy my rock hobby, I figure it's not worth making enemies over. Caring for my neighbours matters to me.
Mike

I guess you need to do what any good neighbor would do. Drown out that noisy old saw with some Twisted Sister cranked up to 11!

Good-neighbor relations is why our rockshop was built with: - extra thick walls
- extra thick insulation
- a sound reducing rubber membrane between the studs and drywall
- special sound reducing drywall www.quietsolution.com/html/quietrock.html
- and sound reducing paint (I kid not, there really is such a thing)
The drywall, paint, and membrane were all a bit pricey; but, when we've got the 30", 18", 12" (new acquisition) saws plus 24" flat lap(s) and multiple vibrating tumblers all going at once (the room also has its own 100 amp power feed) I suspect I might need all that sound reducing power.

Ha ha, Dean, I need to come down and spend some time in YOUR playroom!
Yeah, keeping the neighbors happy has to be a priority, and I don't think it will be too hard, but I do think I will be putting it inside. (need to have my ex come and haul out all the crap she left in my house- I mean it has been 9 years now...)
I think it was my getting obsessive about chopping up a BIG piece of Willow Creek last week that drove him to confront me- I just couldn't let the saw stop for more than a couple minutes before I'd check out what came off and start it slicing again.

Hey, bring here your neighbour, maybe we will be able to get him addicted for rocks. Then, it will be the silence that will disturb him.

I think Adrian is on the right track. I was gonna say you should get your neighbor an old grinder or something, give him a few slabs, and pretty soon he will be over there running the saws for you.

Its got to be quieter than my former neighbors who would run the occasional chainsaw or leaf blower until midnight.
