Was cutting and looking thru my rocks yesterday, and stumbled on this nodule that I thought looked different...and decided to cut it up. Stuff is stinking hard and very solid!..but I have no idea what it is. I'm sure it's some sort of Jasper...and it reminds me of Stone Canyon although it's red. I'm not sure if Stone Canyon is other than yellow. Any Help I.D'ing it....THANKS! The Nodule Few slices

Steve, While Stone Canyon is more typically gold, it does come in red plus those Franciscan cherts pop up all over the California Coast Range of mountains. Squires Ranch Brecciated Jasper from NE of Stone Canyon is a well known named red form and very similar stuff occurs in Indian Valley east of San Miguel, at Creston, CA and along the beaches in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Your specimen could be any of those or even from some of the Mojave Desert jasper sites....Mel

I was going to guess Utah. Those colors are very common in San Rafael Swell, Yellow Cat, Moab, etc.

Also looks similar to San Simeon jasper from California. Here's a pic: -Don

Thanks you guys for helping the ID. I was hoping Mel would see this and give his .02 worth. What a Library of Knowledge....Thanks Mel. I don't think it's from Utah and looking at RS's picture...I'm thinking that's exactly what my rock is. That looks like a huge chunk to Don. Steve

Typical of a lot of jasper I've seen from eastern California. Impossible to say exactly where it came from since it all looks so similar and the occurences are so wide-spread. I love that stuff.
