First off, thanks to John (Jack Yorkshire) and Tom (Connrock) for their help. I was struggling with a matte finish from my Thumler's UV-18 and they guided me through my issues (not enough rock, not enough small rock, and too big a jump from grit to polish). I think the results pretty much speak for themselves. These rocks are dry and they're so glossy that they're difficult to photograph. These are Lake Superior Agates. That's a US quarter in the lower left. My faves are the eye agates: I also ended up with a mystery agate. It doesn't look like a Lake Superior to me because of the coloring, banding (lacy on the edge), and dark husk/matrix (which actually took a polish. I'd appreciate any ideas you have. (This was in the batch of Lake Superiors that I received from a friend.) Face: Edge: Back (husk/matrix): Thanks for looking! Chuck

Chuck, That's a dang nice load! I really like Lakers, and the advice from Tom and Jack must've been heeded to well.....you nailed the shine my friend. I would say the last one is a Laker as well. I am tumbling some right now, and I cannot wait to show mine off. Hopefully they'll turn out as good as yours. Thanks for sharing. Steve

Lakers are nice. Great shine on them. I heard somewhere that lakers are among the oldest rocks around. Don't know if that's true or not.

Condor: Age estimates for Lakers range from 1-2.5 billion years.
I am amazed that such beautiful stones have survived that long. Unfortunately, it hasn't been an easy billion plus years: Lakers are very often fractured (as illustrated in the larger stone), likely due to the repeated freeze-thaw cycles here, as well as being transported by glaciers.

Very nice job!
I'm going to agree laker on that last one as well. It just doesn't have the red throughout the banding, but there are hints of the red still there, most noticeable on the "edge" photo.

Thanks to all!
It looks like the consensus is that the mystery agate is a Laker. Just goes to show that each agate is unique. It must have been a big one when it was formed; wish I had the whole thing!

Awesome batch of lakers there, beautiful shine!! The first two pics sure look like a laker to me but I have to say, that dark rind doesn't look like a laker at all. I don't think I've ever seen one in that color but who knows. I have seen a few that looked almost lacy though.
