I decided to try out the Genie the other day and then again today. I don't have the little bevel tool that the Genie comes with...at least yet...but I will pick it up later this week. My first cab I did was this oval. It is some material Tony (catmandewe) gave me and I think it's from Burro creek. It was hard putting a dome on it because I had to free hand a beveled edge. It turned out okay...but I have lots to learn. It was a quickie job; it was getting dark and I was running out of time. Oh yeah...I was just excited to test the waters! ;D Then today when i got home, I just had to play with the Genie again. I didn't have my little saw out to cut some shapes...so I basically tried to dome polish a few stones. They turned out pretty good. I did these without a dop...and I hit the fingers a few times. I just free-formed the shapes...and most importantly...I HAD TONS OF FUN!! ;D I also have been wanting to try some of the Fire Agate I collected. I found a pretty nice little nodule and so experimented with it. I did use a dop stick for it...and I find it so much easier to use a dop rather than just my short, stubby fingers. I have much to learn...but it will come. Thanks for all comments...good and bad! Steve

Nice first cabs Steve. I like those Fortification agates. I don't have the little bevel tool but I do dop. I draw a line on the side with a scribe, and freehand all the way.

It's about time, Steve! ;D Great start. Nice dryhead, and the little aggie next to it. One suggestion - wherever you've got the Genie set up, put down a piece of rug . . . cause sooner or later you're gonna drop something. Them shiny rocks can be mighty slippery little buggers. Rich

WTG Steve! Love that fortification! I never use a dop and that 80 grit diamond wheel will reach out and touch you Curt

Great start, Steve! I like the combination of sharp corners and curved lines you put on the contour of your cabs. I don't use dop sticks, i did but some cabs fell down whyle polishing or washing during the stages. My favorites are the fortification and the fire agate (you caught the fire very good!)

Hey Steve, your off to a great start! It only gets better, you will have it down in no time. Excellent pick-up on the machine, it couldn't of happened to a nicer dude. Look forward to your next batch.

i have no tool for making the dome, wasn't sure there was one I just eyeball the stone about 1/3 of the way down and freeform it. it takes time and for your first, they look great. you will be a pro before you know it.

Nice free form cab's. You can always tell a free form caber by the way their fingers look... ;D. Keep up the great work. 49er

:)thanks! I appreciate all the kind comments...and with all that awesome and positive feedback; I can't go wrong!! ;D Rich, I'll be sure to put something down in case one of my stones need a softer landing. I know they slipped out of my hands a few times, but only landed in the trays of water. I also tried the eyeball technique...drawing a line...but it didn't work out that great for me. I kind of sucked at it. I really like the Sandsman style of cabs. I like his flat faces and beveled edges. I am going to try to do a few like his....oh how I wish I had more time on a day to day schedule. Thanks again everyone Steve

Nice cabs! I love the fire agate. I'm going to have to hunt some of that stuff down.

Great job on those ! what's this bevel thingy? as for eyeballing to get a straight line... I stack templates and lay the pencil/scribe against that when i try to get a straight line on the cab

Man, I haven't been around here for a few days, and now I see you've been playing with your Genie. If you're having fun, you're doing it right! Good start Steve, and you did great on the fire agate. Hang on to that first cab, in fact post it in my first cab post.
