Hi Everyone, Found your site as a link from the Illinois Meteorites site where I frequently post. I am a native of Las Vegas, and have collected rocks most of my life. Have not done much along the line of lapidary work with the exception of cutting rocks with my tile saw. That was until recently when a large Gibeon iron meteorite destroyed my saw. And no, it did not fall on the saw . Since I do not have any lapidary equipment I want to do something else with a lot of the stuff I have, so I want to get some offered for sale or trade as soon as I can get some photos. Also thought this would be a good place to find people I can hire to cut some rocks I would like to keep. For instance I have a real large chunk of what I believe is magnetite that I would like to have made in to a sphere at some point if anyone here has a sphere making machine. And a real pretty piece of limonite that looks like burlwood when polished. That I would like to have made in to some cabs or maybe a smaller sphere. I have some interesting rock I would also like to get identified. Some of it I think is white and brown opalite from what I could find in my books. It does polish up real nice. And I have a bunch of blue stone that some people from the mineralogical society thought was either sodalite or lapis. It would be nice to find out for sure. Anyway, I won't have a lot to offer as far as knowledge on lapidary (now medicine is a different story), but I look forward to making some new friends, learning some new stuff, and sharing what I can. James

Welcome!
I'm your neighbor, in Pahrump. I mine Chrysocolla out here.
Post some pics of the samples you'd like to have identified. This board has a lot of very knowledgable people.
Go down to Home Depot and get a WorkForce tile saw. Over a hundred people on this board bought them and love them (including me). With tax, they're under $100! Some disassembly required hehehe (you'll see).

I need to photograph a bunch of the selenite I have collected including glass, fibrous, and blades. The nicest being the red blades and clear crystal pieces containing iron oxide. I go out that way once in a while looking for meteorites just northeast of you. Though I have not done much rock hounding out there. Actually my favorite place to rockhound is out past Baker, CA. There is a lot of nice magnetite and volcanic glasses in a multitude of colors. There is also a great place just before Baker that has a lot of nice soapstone and some other rocks if interest. I cannot recall the name of the road leading out to it though since I have nt made it out there in a few years.

The saw I used was a Husky tile saw I picked up at Home Depot for about $300. It did not hold up to the meteorite. I have cut a lot of stone meteorites and other stones with it. Iron meteorites though are extremely hard and will even do in diamond blades really quick. So I will probably end up getting a heavy duty slab saw in the long run if I continue to cut iron meteorites. Or I will sell these whole and stick to cutting the stone meteorites.

Greetings from a beach in northwest Washington. The stuff you have sounds cool. I'll be eagerly waiting for your pix.

Sorry for the delay. I have not been on here in a few days. Anyway, here is the large magnetite I want made in to a sphere if anyone has a sphere making machine here. The piece is broken in two parts, which is the way I found it. I would guess the total weight to be around 25#. i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll32/Hveragerthi/PICT1289.jpg

I posted some more photos in the Rock Identification Library. I will also post more photos of some of my other rocks, such as agates as I get time.
