Went rockhounding in Az this past weekend... found some nice banded Apache tears and colorful jaspers near Bagdad. Sadly we did not reach THE MOTHERLODE (aka purple chalcedony) at Burro Creek. Of course, I busted up rock and loaded 4 barrels as soon as I got home which brings me to my current dilemma: One of my tumblers (Lortone QT66) is having a problem. It rolls along just fine with one barrel on it, but the instant I place the second barrel on the rollers, it stops moving. The belt is slipping I guess. Is there a way to tighten the belt? 'cuz for the life of me I don't see one. The belt is looking kinda old and worn. Sorta like me. Dang it. S

look at where the motor is mounted the bolts should have a little slot to them or make one yourself with a dremel

Cool, Gents. I'll go check it right this very moment. Have a Good Evening, all. Sands I'll get that P-wood in the mail for ya on my next day off - probably Monday. S

I do not think your belt is slipping, unless you can see it doing that. It is acting the way my Loretone acted when the motor was getting worn out. If that is the case, swap out the motor and tumble away.

I don't know if it'll work, but how about using an elastic as a temporary belt?

Actually as Alice stated, use an elastic, but not as a temp belt, but under the belt (to make it tighter) it worked great on mine as it was turning too slow with 2 bbls on it!

You guys are all so helpful and great - I did what Sands suggested, moved the motor over as far as it would go, effectively tightening the belt, and it's been tumbling away for over 24 hours. I was pretty sure it was a belt problem as I could see the motor drive shaft turning, but the belt wasn't turning. Anyway, Doc, I hope it's not a motor issue as I've only had this tumbler for about 6 months. I'll be ordering some new belts from the Rock Shed. Thanks for all your help AS ALWAYS Susan

A little helpful hint: At times when you believe the belt might be slipping, but it seems to have enough tension. Take it off and run it through a small cloth with rubbing alchohol in it and you will be surprised how much oil and residue you will remove. If that doesn't work, then I replace the belt.

Mr Hagstrom - That was the very first thing I did. I cleaned as much oil off the machine as I could...and I cleaned the belt with Isopropyl alcohol (it was either that or tequila and I couldn't waste the Tradicional, you know?) It was a tension problem rather than a cleanliness problem I'm afraid, but my Apache tears are now happily jumbling and tumbling along. Will post photos someday...S
