yes I have. did you coat the inside with something or glue a piece of rubber inside that will encourage better tumbling

I've been thinking about making a tumbler using PVC (as well as a plastic peanut butter jar) and wondered if a few lengthwise strips of silicone or tile putty stuff would do the trick, as far as making sure the rocks tumble rather than slide.
Can anyone think of a clear plastic/acrylic available that could be used as the barrel (aside from my peanut butter jar)? It would be fun to be able to see the stuff actually tumble, and may even be easier to check when stuff is ready.

I use 4" ABS pipe, that way I can glue a cap on one end and use a temp clean out as the lid. I've posted pics of these barrels, so maybe they're still available in the photo section.
Using clear material for the barrels would be nice...for about an hour. After that, the grit would have the inside of the barrel looking like frosted glass.

Hi Chris,
I have used PVC pipe for 5 to 6 years they ar ok but a bit rough on easy fractured stones. try to put alining in a old rubber car mat It reduces the size a little but helps to stop fracturing. Iused to work at a Horse racing stable and used the of cuts of horse box ramp covering material.I also lined paint tins with this stuff for a bigger load(you have to put a plastic bottom in and a wood top to stop it cuting the tin) Yours Jack Yorkshire UK

I was going to say mayonaise jars are larger and acrylic, but they would be frosted soon after.

well so far they don't seem to be slipping I'm using 4 inch thought about going to six inch. I've got a load of Rose quartz in it. I am a truck driver I delivered 4- 55 gallon barrels to a rock shop in Big Rapids, Mi when I told her I was making a tumbler she gave me a bout 6-7 pounds of it. She said it was from Brazil. Pretty cool But thanks for the info My kids and I love to go rock hunting we have been having a blast finding patoskey stones

chris, how about a pic of your homemade tumbler.
No one seems interested in my idea of using pvc pipe with plugs on each end and then rolling them back and forth with your bare feet as you watch TV.
It is the dependence on electricity I guess. (Oh and I haven't really tried it myself yet either. LOL)

the pvc tumbler that I made is in the forum back quite aways I had a wood plug for one end and a cleanout plug for the other and I lined it with .060 rubber roofing and it worked ok. I feel that the store bought barrels with the molded in flat spots encourage better tumbling but if you want to make a barrel do it

These have been running full time for almost 2 years.Use sch 40 pipe. These are al 6 inch. They are great. If you use thin wall it will wear out unless you run it too fast for good tumbling. The rough run at 80 rpm and steps 2,3,4 run at 25 rpm. Attachments:

interesting looking unit you got there James....
I have been toying with the idea of building my own tumbler but on a larger scale with 10-12 inch pipe, plug on 1 end and clean out plug on the other, but the pipe fitting are expensive!!
Might shrink it down to 8 inch pipe instead.
