Besides being a rock nut... I am also a telescope making nut. I have ground several pyrex and plate glass telescope mirrors using much the same technique we use to tumble stones.
My last batch looked good, but the soft stones I did before that didn't do too well. The shine just wasn't there. (Using a vibe tumbler.)
Today, I finished the 220 carborundum grit, and decided to use some of my telescope making stuff. Instead of going straight to the 600 grit pre-polish, I used 305 mesh emory powder. The mohs scale on it says it is about 7-9. Do you think it will help putting that between the 220 cycle and the 600 prepolish cycle?
In making mirrors, there are many more stages of grinding than the three I use now for tumbling in the RayTech vibrating tumbler.

I also have some 320 mesh aluminum oxide. Since it is harder, should I use it instead of the Emery?

I got some emery in the kit that came with my tumbler. I don't know what the mesh is but the instructions tell you not to use it on soft stones.

I work for a large company that has produced the largest telescope mirrors in the world. We polish glass with cerium oxide. I'm not aware of what particle size is used in the process, but if there is interest I'll find out.

The 320 Aluminum Oxide really made a difference in the process. I went from 220 to 320 to 600 prepolish and most of the stones already shine nicely even before the polish has started! I think this will be my new method in the vibe!
