In late July, my 13 yr old son and I are dragging my husband on a road trip up north. Starting in Detroit, driving north to Mackinaw City, then going across the U.P. to Ontonagon and the Keweenaw peninsula, and south to Milwaukee. (This started because my son wants to dig copper at the Caledonia Mine.)
I'd like to get some specific, first-hand info on places to collect rocks and mineral specimens anywhere in Michigan and eastern Wisconsin.
Since this is a family vacation, suggestions on any other 'not to be missed' places of interest are welcome as well. I'm thinking about stopping in Munising to take a tour/cruise on Lake Superior to see the Pictured Rocks and possibly a glass bottom boat tour of the shipwrecks. Hotel info would be great too!
Thanks!

Hope you have not left for your trip, but since you are heading to Munising, check out the local water falls. Very impressive to say the least. Just north-east of Munising on Lake Superior there is a small town call Grand Marias, there is a very nice state park for camping then take the northern road out of town heading east, any where along the road you can stop to hunt for Lake Superior agates. I would suggest finding a beach with little traffic. Wife and I spent four days in the area last year and had a wonderful time collecting some nice rocks. Have fun and hope to see pixs of your trip.... ;D
