I have noticed a marked difference in the performance of 12 lb barrels vs. 6 lb barrels. I'm talking about Lortone barrels with the 12 lb being the same size as two 6 lb barrels end to end.
The 6 lb barrels seem to be more efficient. I have two 6 lb barrels that I have to clean out weekly as oppose to the 12 lb's that get cleaned out every two weeks. Whether using them on the same mega rollers or the 6 lb's on a Lortone roller the 6 lbs seem to develope a good thick slurry sooner.
I use 60/90 grit in all my barrel tumblers and finish off in the vibes. 3/4 cup grit for the 6 lb and 1 1/2 grit for the 12 lb barrels. I'm wondering if it's because the barrel is narrower on the 6 lbs forcing the rocks to grind better than spread out acrros a 12 lb barrel.

I'd agree with that hypothesis. I know on the Thumlers, the barrels grow proportionally to the tumbler (taller and wider), and the larger capacity tumblers work more efficiently.
